Wow! Time is flying. The 2013 season was full of XTERRA Trail Run races across the nation with hundreds of regional champions named. It's been a fun season learning what we are capable of both in training and races. New friends, a stronger, healthier body, and a happy heart spending time in nature are only a few of the many benefits of racing XTERRA events.
It is now the final countdown before the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship. Here is where all regional borders melt, dissolving into the culmination of one big National Championship 21K race where upon crossing the finish line, XTERRA athletes and spectators alike enjoy the honor of celebrating themselves and each other. We are all incredibly fortunate to experience the opportunity to "Live More" as we race in Mother Nature's beautiful playground at Snowbasin Resort.
I look forward to toeing the line with all of you. In the meantime I am in full taper mode. I am resting my body from a summer of hard work. Mileage is down with my most important workouts behind me. From this point forward there is much I can do to make 2013 XTERRA Trail Run Nationals a fantastic experience. There is also a lot I can do to hurt my race performance.
I want to share with you tips to ensure you perform your best come race day.
YOUNGEST RUNNER AT XTERRA NATIONALS IS MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Nine-year-old Jake Mackleer is raising funds for Humane Society
Jake Mackleer is a little guy who likes to dream big. At 9 years old, he will be the youngest runner on the 21-kilometer course for the upcoming XTERRA Trail Run National Championship.
That alone would seem to be impressive enough, but Jake also wants to make a difference in his community. In addition to chasing a national title at the XTERRA Trail Run event, he will be running to raise funds and awareness for the Pender County Humane Society in his hometown of Hampstead, North Carolina.
"We talked to Jake about making this event bigger than himself … ultimately it was his choice to help the animals he loves," said his father, John.
The XTERRA Trail Run National Championship will take place on September 22 at Snowbasin Resort near Ogden, Utah, and more than 700 runners from at least 30 different states are expected to participate.
Jake earned his way into the event, winning the 9-younger age division in the XTERRA North Carolina Trail Run Series. Every age-group champion from the various regions across the United States received free entries to the XTERRA Trail Run Nationals, and Jake was thrilled upon receiving his.
"We have never travelled on a plane for a race, only in-state road trips," John said. "He is so excited and his whole school knows about his event."
Jake is in the fourth grade at South Topsail Elementary School. He is the youngest runner to attempt the 21K championship course at Snowbasin (a 7-year-old ran the previous course at Bend, Oregon).
Georgia runner wants to raise awareness for Angelman Syndrome
Every runner at the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship has a story to tell. Every one of them runs with passion and purpose.
Some stories are more telling than others; some runners have a deeper passion and greater purpose.
Deanna McCurdy is one of them. The 39-year-old mother of two from Peachtree City, Georgia, will make the trip to Utah to compete in the XTERRA Trail Run Nationals for the first time. This year's race is scheduled for September 22 at Snowbasin Resort near Ogden, Utah, and it will draw approximately 700 runners from at least 30 different states.
McCurdy is the founder and head coach of Team Miles for Smiles, a charity running team that raises funding for research through the Foundation for Angelman Syndrome Therapeutics (F.A.S.T.). She started the team after her youngest daughter (now 5 years old) was diagnosed with Angelman Syndrome in 2009.
McCurdy also happens to be a fast runner. She placed first overall at the XTERRA Deep South Trail Run 15K in May. Here is a recent interview with her.

The event will feature two courses – a 15-kilometer long course and a 7K short course. The field was limited to 200 due to parking and trail limitations. It will be the first of seven races in the 2013-14 XTERRA Alabama Trail Run Series.

XTERRA COLORADO TRAIL RUN SERIES SET TO START SEPTEMBER 22
Marathon of Trail Races will offer three courses at Cheyenne Mountain
The XTERRA Colorado Trail Run Series will begin its 2013-14 season on September 22 and runners of all ages and abilities, from all states, are invited to participate.
The XTERRA Marathon of Trail Races is set for September 22 at Cheyenne Mountain State Park in Colorado Springs, and it will serve as the first of four races in the 2013-14 XTERRA Colorado Trail Run Series.
The Marathon of Trail Races is unique in that offers three different courses for runners to choose from. The highlight of the event is a full-marathon course (26.2 miles) that will take the runners on close to 3,000 feet of total climbing in the thin Colorado air. The course will hit a peak elevation of approximately 6,900 feet.
If that sounds a bit extreme, there will also be a half-marathon course (13.1 miles). Both the half-marathon and full-marathon courses will offer challenging uphill and downhill sections, with amazing views along the way.
