As co-author of “The Ultimate Guide to Trail Running,” Nancy Hobbs is an expert in the athletic field. She is the Executive Director of the American Trail Running Association as well as an accomplished runner herself. She organized the first US Women’s Mountain Running Team in 1995, won the 2003 Gold Leaf Half Marathon in Aspen, finished first in her age group at this year’s Barr Trail Mountain Race, and came in 13th in her age group at the World Masters Mountain Running Championship in both 2004 and 2007. This is her first year racing with XTERRA, but Nancy is excited for the new challenge and to meet some of the emerging talent in trail running.

RUN HARD THEN PLAY HARD
Show your XTERRA Trail Run Nationals race bib and get free admission to the 4th annual Bend Oktoberfest, featuring traditional Bavarian music and games, beers and bratwurst, Weiner Dog Races and Kinderland festivities for the young ones. XTERRA will recognize the overall national champs, show a highlight video and slideshow, and dance the night away starting at 6pm (21 and over). CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND RUNNING IN LAKE TAHOE AND MAUI
Just because you are not participating in the off-road triathlon XTERRA USA or World Championship events does not mean you are left out of the action. XTERRA Tillamook Burn Trail Run
After four consecutive days of scorching heat, runners flocked to Oregon’s cool coastal mountains to participate in the XTERRA Tillamook Burn Trail Run on August 17 in Pacific City.
The men’s race was led by Mike Tyler, 41, from Salem, Oregon who finished the 5.81 mile course in 44:49. Tyler edged out Jeremy Kaetterhenry, 24, of Wilsonville, Oregon and fellow Salem resident Mark Robins, 34, by 27 seconds and a minute and a half respectively.
Hubbard, Oregon firefighter Krissy Preim-Smith, 27, finished the women’s race in 55:18 to win the first place title. Runner-up Audra Herndon, 25, from Boring, Oregon had a time of 56:29, and Megan Kaetterhenry, 24, of Wilsonville came in at 58:15 to round out the top three.
By competing in all three events during the 2008 XTERRA Oregon Series, Tyler, Robins and Preim-Smith have each earned enough points to be crowned Regional Champions and have earned free entry to the 2008 XTERRA Trail Running National Championship on September 27 in Bend, Oregon.

XTERRA River Valley Ranch Trail Run
Over 400 runners from 9 states took their places at the start line at the XTERRA River Valley Ranch Trail Runs on August 23 in Manchester, Maryland. In addition to the 5km event from previous years, a 10km race and a kids’ fun run were included attracting more families and doubling the number of participants from last year.
William Garland, 20, from Virginia Beach, VA had the fastest time of the day in the 10km race coming in at 38:55 with Patrick Baur, 23, of Baltimore following less than a minute later. Gaithersburg resident Elena Orlova, 38, won the women’s race in 42:55 almost 5 minutes ahead of runner-up Megan Riley, 20, of Lexington Park, MD.
In the 5km event, Luis Navarro, 31, of Ellicott City took the top spot with his time of 17:52 edging out Chris Sufczynski, 17, of Baltimore in a photo finish by just one second. Sufczynski took second place overall in this event last year as well. For the women, Towson local Stacy Adams, 37, came in first with her time of 22:25 with Molly Morse, 16, of Ellicott City just 12 seconds behind her.
