XTERRA POCONO SERIES CHAMPION: JAMES RYAN
One year ago at this time, James Ryan was a recent high school graduate and novice road runner who rarely ventured outside of his hometown of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
Today, Ryan (pictured courtesy Richard Burgunder / www.powerbar.com) is an XTERRA Trail Run regional champion who is considered a legitimate contender in his age group at next month's XTERRA Trail Run National Championship at the Snowbasin Resort near Ogden, Utah. It has been quite a year for the Kings College student.
"This is my first national event; I'm feeling excited definitely, and I can't wait to go to Utah," he said. "It is going to be an awesome experience. I'm pretty pumped that I'm going a national event when I'm 19."
Ryan will enter the XTERRA Trail Run Nationals for the first time after qualifying as the winner of the 15-19 age division for the XTERRA Pocono Trail Run Series. It is not just his first trip to Utah, but his first trip anywhere outside of the Eastern Time Zone.
"This is going to be my first adventure into the west of the United States," he said. "The farthest I have ever traveled was as about 500 miles north to Maine … and if my girlfriend did not go to school there, I would not drive that far."
Fortunately for Ryan, the XTERRA Pocono Trail Run Series featured five races in 2012 near his home city. He won his age division at all five races, and was the overall winner at three of the races. He was one of only two runners in the Pocono Series to go undefeated in an age group at all five races.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP REGISTRATION ALSO AVAILABLE
It’s never too early to start thinking about Hawaii in December. The 2012 XTERRA Trail Run World Championship is scheduled for December 2 at Kualoa Ranch on the island of Oahu, Hawaii.
Online registration is AVAILABLE HERE.
There is no qualifying process, so the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship is open to runners of all ages and skill levels. There will be three separate courses to accommodate the various levels – the 21-kilometer course will serve as the world championship course, but there will also be 10K and 5K courses available. There is also an “Adventure Walk” division, which is basically a walking tour of some of the scenic beauty at Kualoa Ranch.
The trails at Kualoa Ranch are normally closed to the public, so it is a rare opportunity for both locals and visitors to run on these breathtaking courses. The backdrop of Kualoa Ranch has served as filming locations for movies such as Godzilla, Jurassic Park, Pearl Harbor, and 50 First Dates, as well as television shows LOST and Hawaii Five-O.

PUERTO RICO FINALE THIS WEEKEND
The XTERRA Cabo Rojo Trail Run will take place this Sunday, August 12, at Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. The event will serve as the third, and final, race of the 2012 XTERRA Puerto Rico Trail Run Series.
As the final event in the series, it will determine the overall age-group winners for the Puerto Rico Series. Every age-group winner in the final standings will receive a free entry to represent Puerto Rico at the 2012 XTERRA Trail Run National Championship at Utah on September 23.
Four runners have a shot at going undefeated in their respective age groups for the season: Keenan McIntyre (male 10-14), Alberto Saldana (male 35-39), Manny Santana (male 40-44), and Felo Medina Pagan (male 45-49).
This weekend’s Cabo Rojo Trail Run will feature just one course – a 7-kilometer trail. However, there will also be a short race course for children ages 12 and younger.

TEXAS FINALE ON AUGUST 18
The 2012 XTERRA Texas Trail Run Series will hold its season finale on August 18, when the XTERRA Cameron Park Trail Run takes place at Waco, Texas.
More than 200 runners are expected to brave the heat and take on the challenging course at Cameron Park. Temperatures could be in the 90s for the race, but Cameron Park features more than 20 miles of scenic trails, including sections that overlook the Bosque and Brazos rivers.
The event will feature two courses – a 21-kilometer long course, and a 5K short course. Runners of all ages and skill levels can enter.
The Cameron Park area also features a zoo, and all runners who register for the XTERRA Cameron Park Trail Run will receive a free ticket to the zoo.
There will also be a Kids K Run, which will serve as a benefit for the Talitha Koum Institute (www.talithakoum.org).
The Cameron Park Trail Run will be the fifth, and final, race of the 2012 XTERRA Texas Trail Run Series. The overall age-group winners for the series will be determined after this race.
Every age-group winner from the series will receive a free entry to represent Texas at the 2012 XTERRA Trail Run National Championship at Utah on September 23.

SOUTH CAROLINA FINALE ON AUGUST 18
The XTERRA South Carolina Trail Run Series will close its 2012 season on August 18, when the XTERRA Table Rock Trail Run takes place at Pickens, S.C.
The event will feature a 15-kilometer long course, and a 5K short course, and it is open to runners of all ages and skill levels.
The Table Rock Trail Run’s 15K long course has quickly earned a reputation as one of the toughest runs in South Carolina, although there are also several rewarding views. As race director Victoria Seahorn put it: “The 15K race course is brutal and will test the most seasoned trail runners. It follows the same route as the 5k for the first two miles. However, the 15k course climbs nearly 2,000 feet over the first five miles. You will struggle to make it over several gaps and reach the race’s high point of Pinnacle Mountain. As you descend, you will be rewarded with spectacular views from Bald Rock and other overlooks. More stream crossings, gnarly roots and jagged rocks will keep you on your toes as you wind your way back down the valley toward the finish.”
The Table Rock Trail Run will be the third, and final, race of the 2012 XTERRA South Carolina Trail Run Series, so the overall age-group champions will be determined after this race. Every age-group winner from the overall standings will receive a free entry to represent South Carolina at the 2012 XTERRA Trail Run National Championship at Utah on September 23.
