PREPARING FOR XTERRA NATIONALS - Q&A WITH SARAH BREEVOORT
Sarah Breevoort has experienced previous success at an XTERRA Trail Run - she won the XTERRA Richmond Trail Run 21K race in 2011. Now, she wants to test her skills out west on a national scale.
Breevoort will enter the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship for the first time this year. The prestigious race is scheduled for September 23 at the Snowbasin Resort near Ogden, Utah, and more than 500 runners from around the country are expected to enter.
Fortunately for Breevoort, she has a boyfriend who resides in Utah. During a recent trip to visit him this summer, Breevoort had a chance to practice on the race course for the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship.
She recently took some time to answer some questions about her experience for XTERRA Trail Mix.

REGISTER NOW, SAVE SOME MONEY
It’s not too late to register early for the 2012 XTERRA Trail Run National Championship.
The current online registration fees will increase in August, so now is the time to sign up for the prestigious race.
The XTERRA Trail Run National Championship will return to the beautiful Snowbasin Resort near Ogden, Utah, and this year’s event is scheduled for September 23.
There is no qualifying process for the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship, which means runners of all ages and skill levels can participate. Last year, close to 500 trail runners from 30 different states gathered at Snowbasin Resort for the event.
There will be three different courses to accommodate the various levels of runners. A 21-kilometer half-marathon course will serve as the national championship course, but there will also be a 10K and a 5K.
Current entry fees are $45 for the 21K, $35 for the 10K, and $25 for the 5K. Discounts are available for military and students.
Every age-group winner from the 21K course will be awarded a free entry to race at the 2012 XTERRA Trail Run World Championship, which is scheduled for December 2 at Kualoa Ranch, Hawaii.
The top five overall males and females from the 21K course will also receive prize money. Medals and other prizes will also be awarded to the top age-group runners from all three courses.

NORTH CAROLINA SERIES CONTINUES
Race-day entries will be accepted for the XTERRA Beech Mountain Trail Run, which is scheduled for this Saturday, July 28, at Beech Mountain, North Carolina.
It will be the second of three races in the 2012 XTERRA North Carolina Trail Run Series, and it is open to runners of all ages and skill levels (even newcomers to the North Carolina Series). There will be a 15-kilometer long course for experienced runners, and a 5K course for sprinters and less-experienced runners.
The 15K long course is considered a challenging one, with several up-and-down sections throughout. The course will feature more than 1,500 feet of climbing, reaching a maximum height of approximately 5,200 feet above sea level.

IOWA RACE THIS WEEKEND
The XTERRA Sugar Bottom Trail Run is the only XTERRA Trail Run event in the state of Iowa, so it will offer a rare and unique opportunity for runners to experience some of the hidden beauty of the Hawkeye State.
The XTERRA Sugar Bottom Trail Run is scheduled for July 28 at Solon, Iowa. “Though we don’t have any mountains, people here still love to take to the dirt,” race director Pasha Korsakov said. “Trail running is popular in Iowa as cross-training, and hopefully there will be an even bigger XTERRA presence in the future.”
The event is open to runners of all ages and skill levels, and there will be two courses – a 10K and a 5K – to accommodate the various levels of runners. Race-day registration will be accepted.
Although there will not be any steep mountain climbs, there will be several challenging hills, and the course will traverse through wooded areas around the Coralville Reservoir.
“Sugar Bottom is almost entirely single track with a pretty good mix of technical flat areas and challenging climbs,” Korsakov said.
Runners will also have to face the challenge of unpredictable weather, as temperatures could rise to the 90s on race day, but there is also a chance of thunder storms.

SNOW VALLEY TRAIL RUN NEXT WEEKEND
Trail runners from the Southern California area in need of a summer XTERRA fix can enter the XTERRA Snow Valley Trail Run on August 5.
It is the only XTERRA Trail Run held in the Southern California region during the summer months, and it will take place at the picturesque Rim Nordic Ski Center at Snow Valley Resort near Big Bear.
The event will feature two courses – a 21-kilometer long course and a 10K course. Both races are open to runners of all ages and skill levels.
The 10-kilometer course will offer a really fun, rolling course on wooded trails with lots of shade and about 850 feet of climbing. The half-marathon (21K) racers will complete the course twice plus an additional 1k loop at the start.
The trails at Rim Nordic, popular for cross country skiing in the winter, are quickly becoming a favorite for trail running in the summer, too. The local mountains are the ideal place to beat the summer heat, as temperatures should be warm, but not uncomfortable.
The Snow Valley Trail Run will be held in conjunction with an XTERRA off-road triathlon on August 4, and competitors are welcome to enter either or both the triathlon and trail run.
All competitors at the event will be eligible for custom awards, raffle prizes, a free barbecue lunch, and access to a beer garden for those 21 and older.
The XTERRA Snow Valley Trail Run is not part of the XTERRA SoCal Trail Run Series. However, the SoCal Series will not start until mid-October, so the Snow Valley event is a great opportunity for runners to stay in racing form this summer.
To register for the race or learn more about it, please visit www.xterrasnowvalley.com.
