RACE RECAPS
XTERRA Snowbird Challenge Trail Run
Utah runners returned to the trails at the XTERRA Snowbird Challenge 8km Trail Run on June 28 at Snowbird Resort. Former Michigan State runner Todd Johnson, 24, had the fastest time of the day coming in at 35:21 while Kevin Tuck, 52, took second place at 37:51.
Winning the women’s race, Dorthyann Isackson, 26, completed the 5-mile run in 47:03 with Vanessa Conabee, 35, right behind with her time of 47:46.
Even after the previous grueling XTERRA Utah Series race at Wolf Mountain, race directors John and Kristin Wojciechowski did not give runners any relief climbing this course almost 1000 vertical feet to top off above 9000 feet. Temperatures were cool around 50 degrees during the race as runners ascended the mountain. “This was one of the only summer races where runners had to jump over snow banks” John said. “The runners enjoyed the hilly, woodsy, and single-track trails. There were several waterfalls lining the course and a variety of wildlife including deer and a coyote running alongside our athletes. We had a lot of fun.”
XTERRA Twin Lakes Trail Run
Doug Mitaronda, 27, from Albany, NY was the first to cross the finish line with his time of 34:48 at the XTERRA Twin Lakes Trail Run 8km on July 6 in Hurley, New York. Close behind him was Kingston, NY resident Tom DeHaan, 45.
In the women’s race, Barbara Sessa, 44, of Slate Hill, NY took the top honors with a finishing time of 36:50 with Jean Norton, 46, of Wurtsboro, NY less than a minute behind her.
RUNNER SPOTLIGHT: SUE ANNE CLARK
XTERRA Ambassador Sue Anne Clark has been all over the XTERRA triathlon circuit, but recently she has been seen enjoying the challenges of the XTERRA Philly Trail Run Series. Along with being a physician liaison for The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, she coaches local track and cross country teams and has been getting them involved in the XTERRA trail run series as well. This Bryn Mawr, PA resident slowed down just long enough to tell us why she loves running, racing and XTERRA.
How long have you been running?
I ran track in 4th and 5th grade, but did not pick up the sport again until I was 31. I started trail running in 2004 when I was introduced to XTERRA triathlons.
What is the best part about trail running?
It’s cool in the summer and warm in the winter running in the woods. I love the obstacles and challenges trails present.
What motivates you to run?
I have goals to motivate me, but mostly it’s my thought of “I am able to run and this is a gift” that gets me out there to train.
What advice would you give others just starting in the world of trail running?
Go to your local running store and ask to be fitted for a good running shoe. This is the first advice I give my kids and their parents when they step onto the track.
What makes up your running schedule?
I mix it up with my triathlon training, so my goal is to run 3 times a week at minimum. I also include intervals, long runs, trail runs, road runs, beach runs, track workouts with the local running club, and the “de-stress” runs.
Where is your favorite place to go trail running?
Haverford College’s Nature Trail. It’s right out my front door.
How does trail running help in other areas of your life?
It has helped me in the area of “how to approach” things. It’s never a question of whether or not to approach a challenge, but it’s how do I approach the challenge so I can move forward (quickly).
XTERRA trail runs are…
Adventuresome, challenging, and a true test of athleticism.
Thanks Sue Anne. Good luck with all your upcoming XTERRA races!
