XTERRA Trail Mix Newsletter

Ricky Howe has competed in 600 races in his running career, which started in the 1970s. Every single one of those races has taken place in the state of Florida.

That will change on September 23, when Howe enters the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship at the Snowbasin Resort near Ogden, Utah. Howe, who resides in Tampa, Florida, won the men's 55-59 age group for the 2012 XTERRA Florida Trail Run Series, and will make use of the prize that came with it - a free entry to represent Florida at the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship.

Ricky Howe"I have never run trails outside of Florida, so I am surely in for an elevation and altitude shock of my life," said Howe, 58. "Looking forward to the challenge, but I'm quite sure this course will kick my butt."

Howe may not be the fastest runner on the course, but he is one of the most experienced. In addition to competing in races, he has also served as a race director in Tampa, Florida. "I always loved running as a kid, and used it to get in shape for racquet sports," he said. "When road racing began in the 70s, I was bitten."

More recently, he has taken a liking to trail running. "I race a lot and run trails every week. I will be adding a lot of hill work in the coming months to get ready for the kind of elevation changes we will face in the Nationals.

Howe is a two-time age group champion in the XTERRA Florida Trail Run Series. He also won the 55-59 division in 2011, but declined the invitation to race in Utah due to scheduling conflicts. This year, he made sure his calendar was clear for September 23.

"This is my second win in a row, and you never know if you will get another chance," he said. "I didn't want to miss out on this kind of experience."

Two runners will win free airfare to Utah

The XTERRA Pocono Trail Run Series has made significant strides in popularity in its second season, and there is one more chance to join the fun. The XTERRA Gouldsboro Trail Run is scheduled for Saturday, June 30, at Gouldsboro State Park, Pennsylvania, and it will be the fifth, and final, race of the 2012 XTERRA Pocono Trail Run Series.

Richard BurgunderMore than 200 runners from 14 different states have already participated in the 2012 Pocono Series, and race director Rich Pais said every race so far has seen an increase in participation from last year.

This Saturday's race will feature an 8-kilometer course that will take the runners along varied terrain. The course will start along the sand near a lake, and then head into a dense forest with numerous hills, before heading back out to the lake area.

The race is open to runners of all ages and skill levels, even those who have not previously participated in a Pocono Series event. Race-day registration will be available. CLICK HERE for more information.

The Gouldsboro Trail Run will also serve as the last chance for runners to earn points toward the overall standings for the series. The top runner in each respective age group will receive a free entry to represent Pocono at the 2012 XTERRA Trail Run National Championship at Utah in September.

Two runners - one male and one female - will be selected at random after the race for the grand prize of the Pocono Series: roundtrip airfare to Utah to run at the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship. Only runners who have participated in every race of the series are eligible for the grand prize.

Three races on 2012 schedule; open to all runners

Summer is in full swing, which means it is time for the XTERRA North Carolina Trail Run Series to get up and running again.

Beach Mountain RunnerAfter successful seasons in 2010 and 2011, the XTERRA North Carolina Trail Run Series is back with three summer races on the 2012 calendar.

"I think there's a lot of potential in North Carolina," series director Tim Schroer said. "There are some beautiful trail systems there and some really fast runners. We've been building this series the last two years and the word is spreading so we're hoping to be bigger and better."

The 2012 North Carolina schedule will feature three races at three different locations (see schedule below). Each race will offer two separate courses - a "long" course and a shorter option. Therefore, runners of all ages and skill levels can participate.

The first race in the series will be the XTERRA Whitewater Trail Run, which is scheduled for July 14 at the U.S. National Whitewater Center in Charlotte. That race has gained popularity because of the challenging trails and unique scenery - part of the trail traverses along the whitewater rapids that are used for training by Olympic kayakers.

The other two races in the North Carolina Series are scheduled for July 28 at Beech Mountain, and September 1 at Davidson. It is worth noting that the XTERRA North Carolina Trail Run Series is open to runners from all states.

Trail running will return to the Southern California region on August 5, when the XTERRA Snow Valley Trail Run takes place at the Snow Valley Ski Resort near Big Bear.

Snow Valley RunnerIt is the only XTERRA Trail Run held in the Southern California region during the summer months, and it will take place at the picturesque Rim Nordic Ski Center at Snow Valley.

The event will feature two courses – a 21-kilometer long course and a 10K course. Both races are open to runners of all ages and skill levels.

The 10-kilometer course will offer a really fun, rolling course on wooded trails with lots of shade and about 850 feet of climbing. The half-marathon (21K) racers will complete the course twice plus an additional 1k loop at the start.

The trails at Rim Nordic, popular for cross country skiing in the winter, are quickly becoming a favorite for trail running in the summer, too. The local mountains are the ideal place to beat the summer heat, as temperatures should be warm, but not uncomfortable.

The Snow Valley Trail Run will be held in conjunction with an XTERRA off-road triathlon on August 4, and competitors are welcome to enter either or both the triathlon and trail run.

All competitors at the event will be eligible for custom awards, raffle prizes, a free barbecue lunch, and access to a beer garden for those 21 and older.

To register for the race or learn more about it, please visit www.xterrasnowvalley.com.

It is worth noting that this race will not award points for the XTERRA SoCal Trail Run Series, and runners with or without experience in XTERRA Trail Runs are welcome to enter.
