NAPIERS TAKING THE LONG TRAIL
Father and son will travel from South Carolina to Alabama to run in marathon
What started as a form of rehabilitation has now become a passion for Harris Napier. The 15-year-old started trail running just four months ago as a way to rehabilitate a broken leg. This Sunday, he will attempt to run a trail marathon.
Harris and his father Joe are entered in the XTERRA Oak Mountain Trail Runs, which is scheduled for Sunday, May 20, at the Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, Alabama.
Harris is a freshman at Wando High School in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. He, his father and his cousin Tanner Hollars will be making the trip to Alabama this weekend to participate in the Oak Mountain Trail marathon.
Harris will be the youngest runner in the marathon field, and likely the most inexperienced. "I'm a little nervous about it, but I've been training for a while now, so I think it should be good," Harris said.

XTERRA RICHMOND FAST APPROACHING
The XTERRA Richmond Trail Run is set for June 9, and a strong showing there could help runners get to Hawaii in December.
This year’s Richmond Trail Run will once again take place on the picturesque trails at Brown’s Island, Richmond, Virginia. The event has rightfully earned a reputation as one of the most unique – and fun – trail runs in the country, and more than 600 runners participated last year.
The XTERRA Richmond Trail Run actually consists of two courses – a 21-kilometer long course and a shorter course of 10 kilometers. The 21K trail is considered the championship course, and it will feature numerous challenges, including a grueling climb up the Manchester staircase (also known as “The Mayan Ruins”), and jumping from boulder to boulder to get across the James River.
For the first time, the XTERRA Richmond Trail Run will offer free entries to the 2012 XTERRA Trail Run World Championship. And it’s not just for the overall winners. Each age-group winner, male and female, for the 21K race at Richmond will earn a free entry to the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship, which is scheduled for December 2 at Kualoa Ranch, Oahu, Hawaii.
The 10K course at Richmond was recently ranked as one of the top 32 trail races in America by Runner’s World Magazine. Both the 21K and 10K courses are open to runners of all ages and skill levels (though only the 21K age-group winners will receive the free entry to the Hawaii race).
Registration for the XTERRA Richmond Trail Run is available online. To register or learn more about the event, please visit http://www.xterraplanet.com/xduro/richmond.html.
TIPS FOR THE TRAIL - NUTRITION FOR TRAIL RUNS
By Rachel Cieslewicz
Training for races calls for proper training, sleep, nutrition, and life in general to all come together perfectly. Nutrition impact is often severely overlooked. Has it ever happened to you: your stomach feels great during training, but on race day gastric distress or bonking has kept you from reaching your race day potential? Sometimes it is nerves causing the issue, but more often, we put in our mind that race day nutrition needs to be severely different than that of a hard training day. In fact, the opposite is true.
Each person has individual needs when it comes to nutrition. It is imperative to realize that what we put into our bodies is every bit as important as the actual running when training for events. Just like a training journal for your workouts, it is a great idea to keep a food journal alongside it. My favorite way to log it is in Training Peaks www.trainingpeaks.com This website is amazing in that you can track all of your training, racing, and nutrition in one place. It has amazing analytical tools you can use to track and adjust progress for years. When you log your training day details, keep in mind and report what affect the food and hydration you consumed before, during, and after your workout had on your ability to complete your training. It is a great tool to have over time to help you with race day.
Generally, you might hear that pasta and other forms of carbohydrate loading the night before the race, along with massive quantities of sports drink will lead you to the best race ever. This is not necessarily true. Before hard training days, have you tried this? What was the outcome? Did you feel great and light and able to train at your full capacity? What about during your races? Do you all of a sudden in the race take in foreign gels and sports drinks you’ve never tried before? This is asking for disaster.
