TRAIL RUNNER SPOTLIGHT: BLAS ELIAS
Hometown: Kennedy, TX (currently living in Las Vegas, NV)
Family: Wife and two kids
Occupation: Musician. He’s a drummer for the Blue Man Group, and he was also the drummer for the rock band Slaughter in the 90’s.
This past Saturday, Blas finished third overall and first in the 40-44 division of the inaugural XTERRA Lake Las Vegas 10k trail run with his time of 44:41. After the race, he finally slowed down long enough for us to catch up with him.
When did you start trail running?
I’ve been running since I was a teenager. I basically ran as a way to spend time with my dad who worked a lot. I started focusing on trail running when I was on tour with my band Slaughter. I would leave the hotel or venue we were playing and just start running. Since I didn’t have a GPS back then, I occasionally got lost and almost missed the shows.
What is your biggest motivation to run?
It makes me feel good, almost like meditation for me. I find I am the most creative when I am running, so I’ll write songs and work out problems during my workouts. I also think I owe it to my kids to stay healthy so I can be there for them as long as I can.
Any trail running advice?
Have fun and enjoy nature. It shouldn’t feel like work or something you have to do. As far as technique goes, I shorten my stride, increase my cadence, and try to keep my feet under my center of gravity so I’m not putting as much weight on each step. I find it helps me avoid injuries on uneven terrain.
What makes up your running schedule?
I don’t really have a set schedule, but I usually run four or five days a week. I love running hills, so I use that as speed and strength training. I occasionally run the Las Vegas strip before the show – it’s kind of like running an obstacle course dodging the tourists.
What is your favorite place to trail run?
I don’t have just one favorite, but I just ran some great trails at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, Alabama while I was on vacation there.
(Note: The XTERRA Oak Mountain Mud Runs are coming up on June 12th, so don’t miss your chance to race on this amazing course. Register now! )
