A VISITING RUNNER'S PERSPECTIVE PERSPECTIVE AT LAKE LAS VEGAS
Editor's note: Elite runner Brandon Mader entered the XTERRA Lake Las Vegas Trail Run for the first time in his running career on April 15. Despite running with a stress fracture in his tibia, Mader placed second overall in the 21-kilometer long course. He resides in Huntsville, Alabama, and made the trip to Las Vegas for the event. He agreed to share some of his thoughts with the XTERRA Trail Mix:
I loved the course because of how open the trails were. What I normally run on is dense, rocky single-track. Being able to just focus on running instead of dodging trees was a welcome change. The footing was loose and rocky in many places but again, I am accustomed to that so it was an advantage. The weather was beautiful with medium temperatures and bright sunshine - very pleasant.
The leg held up much better than I thought it would, with only shooting pain on the steep downhills. The rest of the course I was free to go hard. I was very limited, however, by not running the 10 days leading up to the race and being on the bike so much. The third-place finisher (Fernando Ramirez) took the race out in 5:36 for the first mile - completely opposite of what I was hoping for.
The injury occurred because of overtraining; I was in a heavy buildup for a marathon next month and just developed a fracture in the tibia. I dealt with it using a compression splint I sewed together the week before the race, then took care on the downhill sections of the course. And much ice during the post-race festivities.
BENDT WINS TWICE AT HICKORY KNOB
Samantha Bendt was looking for a trail race with a challenging distance last weekend. She found it by completing - and winning - two races on the same day.
Bendt took the spotlight twice at the XTERRA Hickory Knob Trail Run, which was completed on Saturday, April 21, at Hickory Knob State Park in McCormick, South Carolina.
The event featured two courses - a 5.5-kilometer short course, and an 11.5-kilometer long course. Bendt registered for both courses, and was the first female finisher for both.
She completed the short course in 28 minutes, 1 second, and then had about a 20-minute break before the start of the long course. Bendt said she started fast in the long course and stayed in front the entire way, finishing with a time of 58 minutes, 51 seconds.
"I knew I was the first female because I focused on entering the woods as the first female and maintaining that position, which I did successfully," said Bendt, who is 33 and resides in Rock Hill, S.C.
Bendt was one of four runners to complete both courses for the event. She said she planned on running both courses for at least a month.
POCONO SERIES SET TO START ON MAY 5
The XTERRA Pocono Trail Run Series will begin its 2012 season on May 5.
The XTERRA Big Pocono Trail Run on May 5 will be the first of five races in the Pocono Series for 2012. Runners of all ages and skill levels can participate in the series, and there is an early-registration special available.
Between now and May 4, runners can register for all five races in the series for just $100. As an added incentive, runners who complete all five races in the series will be eligible to win free airfare to Utah to compete in the 2012 XTERRA Trail Run National Championship.
At the conclusion of the series on June 30, every runner who has completed all five races in the series will get their names listed and one male and one female runner from that list will be selected at random to win the airfare to Utah.
The XTERRA Pocono Trail Run Series made its debut last year, and received rave reviews from runners for its picturesque courses.
"What I like most about the Pocono area is its stunning natural beauty and how the region is an outdoor sports mecca," said Richard Burgunder, who won the men's 30-34 age group in the Pocono Series last year. "Within the endless mountain region, you'll find abundant forest, lakes, rivers, streams and wildlife. It's an amazing place for any extreme and adventure sports enthusiast."

BIG FINALE THIS WEEKEND FOR SOCAL SERIES
The XTERRA SoCal Trail Run Series will close its 2012 season in grand fashion this weekend at Malibu, Calif.
The XTERRA Malibu Creek Trail Run will serve as the final race of the season in the SoCal Series, and a capacity field of 800 runners is expected to compete. The event is scheduled for Sunday, April 29, at Malibu Creek State Park.
The Malibu Creek Trail Run will feature two course options for runners – a 22-kilometer long course and a 6-kilometer short course. Both courses are open to runners of all ages and skill levels.
The race has become one of the most popular trail-running events in the state due in part to its breathtaking views and challenging climbs and descents. Jonathan Toker of Malibu won the race last year and will be back to defend his title. “Regardless of the conditions, and on any day all year, this route features some of the most scenic trails in all of Southern California,” he said.
All participating runners will receive an event shirt and a post-race breakfast. Dos Equis beer recently became a sponsor of the XTERRA SoCal Trail Run Series, so samples will be offered after the race to runners of legal age.
Also, all finishers of the race will receive a Dos Equis digital finisher’s badge, which can be posted on Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin accounts.
The XTERRA SoCal Trail Run Series has already completed six races, and the Malibu Creek Trail Run will serve as the seventh, and final, event of the season. Runners who have participated in all seven races in the series will receive a commemorative shirt signifying the accomplishment.
The top 15 runners in each respective age group earn points after each race. The points are tallied throughout the season, and at the conclusion of the series, each respective age-group champion will earn a free entry to represent SoCal at the 2012 XTERRA Trail Run National Championship at Ogden, Utah, in September.
There are still openings for the XTERRA Malibu Creek Trail Run. To register online or learn more about it, please visit www.trailrace.com.

FLORIDA SERIES CONCLUDES THIS SUNDAY
The XTERRA Florida Trail Run Series will conclude its 2012 season with a unique race in Lithia, Florida, this weekend. The XTERRA Claw Trail Run is scheduled for Sunday, April 29, at Alafia River State Park, and more than 400 runners are expected to participate.
The Claw is one of the most popular trail races in Florida because it offers runners a chance to run on uncharted trails. Much of the course is set on areas of the park normally closed to the public, including steep hill climbs and stream crossings.
The event will feature two course options – a 10-mile long course and a 5-mile short course. Both courses are open to runners of all ages and skill levels, and online registration is still available at www.clawrun.com.
All registered runners will receive an event shirt and an invitation to the post-race breakfast.
The event will also serve as the third, and final, race of the 2012 XTERRA Florida Trail Run Series, so it will be the last chance for runners to earn points toward the overall age-group standings. At the conclusion of the series, each age-group winner will receive a free entry to represent Florida at the 2012 XTERRA Trail Run National Championship at Utah in September.
Two runners have a shot at undefeated seasons in their respective age group: Kandis Dunn (female, 40-44) and Jeff Morey (male, 65-69).
