YOU CAN BE FIRST AT SANTA CRUZ
If you want a guaranteed shot at being a “first,” then the XTERRA Santa Cruz Trail Runs is the race to enter.
The inaugural XTERRA Santa Cruz Trail Runs is scheduled for May 14 at Wilder Ranch State Park in Santa Cruz, Calif., and registration is open at www.xterraplanet.com. It is the first XTERRA trail run ever held in that city, so simply participating in the race will make you part of an historic event.
And there is no excuse not to enter. There will be three separate courses – a 20-kilometer championship course, and shorter 10-kilometer and 5-kilometer courses – meaning runners of all ages and skill levels can participate.
XTERRA Trail Runs are renowned for making the most of a city’s natural landscape, and this event will be no exception. The courses are expected to take runners along sandy shorelines, up and down cliffs, and past farmlands. Those familiar with the area know that it will be a unique opportunity to run along the picturesque trials at Wilder Ranch.
Entry fees are $25 for the 5k, $30 for the 10k and $40 for the 20k. Discounts are available for students and military.

TIPS FOR THE TRAIL: HOW TO TRAIN FOR BACK TO BACK RACES
By Rachel Cieslewicz
A life worth living is one where dreams are created and experienced, and goals are set. It takes a lot of work, sweat, planning, and perseverance to reach achievements along the way. Sometimes stepping back and re-directing, before moving forward once again, leads us to our greatest self. Running is a great way to practice this mantra of life.
For many runners, several races early in the year lead to our big events at the end of the season. It can become a more enjoyable journey when you learn how to balance training, racing and recovery. This can be quite tricky when you schedule races close together, perhaps even on back-to-back weekends.
Before we get into that, here is a brief description of my typical training week before the race season starts:
XTERRAFlex OFFER 20% DISCOUNT FOR TRAIL MIX SUBSCRIBERS
XTERRAFlex is offering all of our XTERRA Trail Mix newsletter subscribers a special 20% discount on bottles of their joint supplement designed to keep your joints flexible and well-lubricated.
XTERRAFlex, is a once daily, liquid oral joint supplement, that replenishes your joint fluid.
The only active ingredient in XTERRAFlex is hyaluronan (HA). HA is the main ingredient in joint fluid, and it is naturally-occurring. Joint fluid deteriorates with age and exercise. In fact, the more you exercise, the faster joint fluid degenerates.

JOHNSON & JOHNSON WIN XTERRA WACO 20KM TRAIL RACE
Dripping Springs (TX) High School track star Dylan Johnson, 17, passed Dallas’ Tyler Johnson (no relation) on a tight, twisty downhill section of singletrack at about mile nine and never looked back in winning the XTERRA Waco 20km Trail race at Cameron Park in Waco, TX this morning.
Dylan Johnson (pictured), who runs the mile and 800-meter and is shooting to earn a track scholarship to college, would’ve certainly excited recruiters on this day as he tackled the grueling up-and-down trails with reckless abandon and won with a time of 1:28:53, nearly a minute ahead of his nearest competition.
“He caught me coming down this gnarly section of near vertical downhill trail and I moved out of his way because there was no way I could keep up with him. I couldn’t believe how fast he was running those technical sections,” said runner-up Tyler Johnson.
“This course is awesome. I love running through the trees, it’s like being an animal. Not sure about Jacob’s Ladder though, that was tough, those stairs set your calves on fire,” said Dylan Johnson, who won the 10km Waco trail race last year.
FLORIDA SERIES SET TO FINISH
The inaugural XTERRA Florida Trail Run Series will come to a thrilling – and somewhat mysterious – finale on May 1.
The XTERRA “The Claw” Adventure Run is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. on May 1 at Alafia River State Park. There will be two trail courses for runners to choose from, a 10-mile long course and a shorter 5-mile course.
The courses will feature challenging hill climbs and descents, and stream crossings. The 10-mile course will traverse into areas of the park that are normally closed to the public, thus adding an aura of mystery for even the most experienced runners.
More than 300 runners of various ages and skill levels are expected to participate, and entries are still being accepted at www.clawrun.com.
The Claw Adventure Run will be the third, and final, race of the 2011 XTERRA Florida Series, so season champions will be determined by the results of this race. Each age-group season champion will be invited to compete in the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship at Ogden, Utah, in September.
The first two races in the series have been competitive, and only four runners have a shot at completing 3-for-3 undefeated seasons: Liza Hash (female 35-39), Ann Duchac (female 45-49), Sarah Ransom (female 50-54), and Bill Wenner (male 45-49).
All runners who pre-register for the race will receive an event T-shirt, and will be fed breakfast at the park following the race.
