RECORD FIELD RUNNING AT LAKE LAS VEGAS
A record field of more than 500 trail runners has registered to participate in the XTERRA Lake Las Vegas Trail Run on Sunday, April 15. It will be the largest field of runners for the event in its four-year history.
The event will feature three courses – a 21-kilometer long course, a 10K and a 5K – just off Lake Las Vegas in Henderson, Nevada. The unique desert trails have been described by previous competitors as “like running on the moon” because of the loose rocks, sandy terrain, and lack of forestation.
The runners in the 21K long course will have something to chase – each male and female age-group winner will receive a free entry to the 2012 XTERRA Trail Run World Championship in Hawaii in December.
All three courses are open to runners of all ages and skill levels, and it’s not too late to add your name to the record field.
In-person registration will be available on Saturday, April 14, at the race site near Lake Las Vegas (just outside the Aston MonteLago Village Resort), from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. That will be the last chance to register, as there will be no race-day registration.

COLORADO SERIES RESUMES THIS WEEKEND
At the last XTERRA Colorado Trail Run Series race back in October, runners were treated to some unique conditions – snowfall and temperatures in the 20s.
After taking the winter months off due to even more extreme conditions, the XTERRA Colorado Trail Run Series will resume on Saturday, April 14. And guess what? Runners could face similar conditions as the last race. Temperatures could drop into the 30s, with a chance of rain or snow in the Colorado Springs area.
That is fine with race director Victoria Seahorn, who says: “It’s Colorado, so anything is possible. It can be in the 70s one day, and snowing the next. Either way, it will offer runners a beautiful and challenging course that only Colorado can provide.”
The event will feature two courses – a 24-kilometer long course for experienced distance runners, and a 12K course. It is open to runners of all ages and skill levels. Race-day registration will be available, starting at 7:30 a.m.
After the race, all runners will be invited to the awards party at the Boulder Running Company.
The XTERRA Cheyenne Mountain Trail Run will be the second of four races in the 2011-12 XTERRA Colorado Trail Run Series. For more information on the event, please visit www.marathonmajic.com.
NEW RACE COMING UP FOR TEXAS SERIES
The XTERRA Texas Trail Run Series will introduce a new race on April 21 – the XTERRA Bluebonnet Trail Run at Reveille Peak Ranch in Burnet, Texas.
The event will feature a 10k and a 5K course, and it is open to runners of all ages and skill levels. According to race director Kathy Hudson, the trails at Reveille Peak Park are popular with runners because it is both challenging and picturesque.
“Very, very beautiful course,” she said. “They have these big granite rock outcroppings, and at this time of year, the bluebonnets are blooming and it looks gorgeous all along the trails. At the same time, there are some tough hills and singletrack on the course, so you can’t spend too much time looking around.”
The XTERRA Bluebonnet Trail Run will serve as the second of five races on the 2011-12 schedule for the Texas Series. The top finishers in each age group will earn points toward the overall standings of the series.
Online registration is open at www.terrafirmaracing.com. All runners will receive a race shirt and a souvenir pint glass.
SOUTH CAROLINA SERIES SET TO BEGIN ON APRIL 21
The XTERRA South Carolina Trail Run Series will open its 2012 season with the XTERRA Hickory Knob Trail Run on April 21 at McCormick, S.C.
The event will feature two courses – a 12-kilometer course for experienced distance runners, and a 5K for sprinters and less-experienced runners. Both courses are considered “moderate” with no huge climbs, but lots of fun twists and turns. It is open to runners of all ages and skill levels.
In a unique scheduling format, the two courses will start at different times, so ambitious runners who want to enter both can do so. All runners who complete both courses will receive a special medal.
The event will be the first of three races in the 2012 XTERRA South Carolina Trail Run Series.
The XTERRA Hickory Knob Trail Run is also being held in conjunction with an XTERRA off-road triathlon at the same site on April 22. Discounts are available for those who want to enter the trail run on April 21, and then the triathlon on April 22.
