XTERRA Trail Mix Newsletter

A strong run and a little bit of luck can go a long way in Las Vegas. On April 15, it could help runners in the XTERRA Lake Las Vegas Trail Run get to Hawaii.

Rachel CieslewiczEvery age-group winner in the XTERRA Lake Las Vegas Trail Run on April 15 will earn a free entry to the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship at Kualoa Ranch, Hawaii, in December.

The XTERRA Lake Las Vegas Trail Run will take place on a desert course just outside the Aston MonteLago Resort, which is 17 miles off the famous Las Vegas Strip. The event is open to runners of all ages and skill levels.

There are three courses to accommodate the various levels of runners - a 21-kilometer long course, as well as a 10K and 5K. Only the 21K course age-group winners will receive the free entry to the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship.

The 21K course at Lake Las Vegas has drawn positive reviews from past runners for its unique terrain and breathtaking views. Rachel Cieslewicz (pictured, courtesy XTERRA Photos), the defending women's champion of the event, said: "It is unique in that you literally feel as though you are running on Mars. Red sandy soil, crazy hills, and wild desert skies will inspire you to run fast and strong."

Registration for all three distances of the event is open at www.xterralakelasvegas.com.

The XTERRA Trail Run World Championship is scheduled for December 2 on the island of Oahu, and more than 2,000 runners from around the world are expected to participate. That event is also open to runners of all ages and skill levels. For more information, please visithttp://www.xterraplanet.com/xduro/championship.html.

The always popular XTERRA SoCal Trail Run Series will host nearly 400 runners for the XTERRA Black Mountain Trail Run this Sunday, March 25, at San Diego.

Black Mountain RunnersThe event is expected to draw several elite competitors from the area, including former Ironman World Champion Heather Fuhr. She won the XTERRA Black Mountain Trail Run last year, and said she will be back to defend her title.

“As with all XTERRA race courses, this one is challenging, but probably less challenging than some,” Fuhr said. “A person can maintain a fair bit of speed throughout the course -- with the exception of the last mile which is fairly brutal!”

The weather forecast is showing a chance of rain on race day, which could make the conditions even more challenging. “Rain always makes a difference, but the beauty is that it is the same for Everyone,” Fuhr said. “If it is muddy and slippery, then everyone just goes a bit slower.”

In addition to the 15-kilometer long course, there will also be a 5-kilometer course for sprinters and less-experienced runners. Both courses are open to runners of all ages.

The XTERRA Black Mountain Trail Run is the sixth of seven races in the 2011-12 season for the SoCal Series, so it will be one of the last chances for runners to earn valuable points toward the overall series standings.

Race-day registration will be held only if space is still available, so it is best to register online at www.trailrace.com.

Three other XTERRA Trail Run races are scheduled for this weekend, and all three will be holding race-day registration for the last-minute entries:
March 24 – XTERRA Steilacoom Trail Run 16k / 8k (Lakewood, Washington)
March 25 – XTERRA Black Canyon Trail Run 21k / 9k (Rock Springs, Arizona)
March 25 – XTERRA Trout Creek Trail Run 15k / 5k (Tampa, Florida)

Spring is here, which means it's time for the XTERRA Colorado Trail Run Series to spring into action again.

Colorado RunnersThe inaugural XTERRA Cheyenne Mountain Trail Run is scheduled for April 14 at the picturesque Cheyenne Mountain State Park in Colorado Springs. The event is open to runners of all ages and skill levels, and there will be two courses to accommodate the various levels of runners.

Experienced distance runners can opt for the 24-kilometer course, but there will also be a 12-kilometer course available. As expected for a race in Colorado, the race trails will take runners to thin-air elevations ranging from 6,500 to 7,200 feet above sea level.

"It's Colorado, so anything is possible," race director Victoria Seahorn said. "It can be in the 70s one day, and snowing the next. Either way, it will offer runners a beautiful and challenging course that only Colorado can provide."

The XTERRA Cheyenne Mountain Trail Run will be the second of four races in the 2011-12 XTERRA Colorado Trail Run Series.  The first race was held in October, and the series took the winter months off due to the extreme weather conditions.
