TIPS FOR THE TRAIL - LOOKING FORWARD TO LAKE LAS VEGAS
It's finally spring again! This is my favorite time of year as it means longer days full of sun and warmth. And of course with the shifting of the seasons, this means it is time to hit the national XTERRA circuits again!
The trail running event I look forward to most in the early season is the XTERRA Lake Las Vegas Trail Run, which is held in conjunction with the XTERRA West Championship Triathlon. It is the perfect spring get-away. It is the perfect reason to celebrate a sunny warm weekend with like-minded friends and fierce competition.
With the Las Vegas airport only 20 minutes away and the Strip less than 30, it is crazy to think that such an amazing desert oasis is so close to the hype and neon lights. In fact, Lake Las Vegas resort is such a stark contrast to the Strip, it is pretty much on its own planet I like to call Paradise. The gorgeous Aston MonteLago Village Resort's lush setting acts as the ideal background for the race start, as well as a fabulous home base for a fun filled weekend.
If Rachel Cieslewicz’s above plan has inspired you to give the XTERRA Lake Las Vegas Trail Run a try, there is still time to register online.

The event is scheduled for Sunday, April 14, with an 8:30 a.m. start. There are three course options – a 21-kilometer long course, a 10K and a 5K.
Every age-group winner from the 21K race will receive a free entry to the 2013 XTERRA Trail Run World Championship at Kualoa Ranch, Hawaii, on November 24.
All three courses are open to runners of all ages and skill levels from all states. As noted by Cieslewicz above, the desert trails at Lake Las Vegas are a unique experience that every runner should try at least once.

BUSY WEEKEND FOR XTERRA TRAIL RUNS
Four races in four different states are on tap this weekend on the XTERRA Trail Run circuit, including a season-opener and a season finale.
The four races:
- The XTERRA Hickory Knob Trail Run at McCormick, South Carolina, on Saturday, March 23. It will be the opening race in the 2013 XTERRA South Carolina Trail Run Series, and it will be a big one. There will be five different courses – a 50K, 42K, 23K, 12K and 5K.
- The XTERRA Camp Eagle Trail Run at Rocksprings, Texas, on Saturday, March 23. It will be the second of seven races in the 2013 XTERRA Texas Trail Run Series. There will be two course options – a 21K long course and a 6K short course.
- The XTERRA Black Canyon Trail Run at Rock Springs, Arizona, on Sunday, March 24. It will be the fourth – and final – race in the 2013 XTERRA Arizona Trail Run Series. The overall age-group champions for the Arizona Series will be determined at this race. There will be two course options – a 21K and a 9K. Recent rain in the area has created a river at the bottom of the canyon, and runners can expect to get their feet wet with several river crossings.
- The XTERRA Trout Creek Trail Run at Tampa, Florida, on Sunday, March 24. It will be the second of three events in the 2013 XTERRA Florida Trail Run Series. There will be two course options – a 15K and a 5K. The top 25 males (regardless of age) and top 25 females (regardless of age) will receive a stainless steel travel cup.
BURGUNDER SETS SIGHTS ON ANOTHER ADVENTUROUS SEASON
Richard Burgunder has never met an XTERRA Trail Run he didn't like. His race resume is proof enough.
Burgunder, 32, has already competed in XTERRA Trail Run races in Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, New Hampshire, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Utah, Vermont, Virginia and Japan over the past five years. He has no intention of slowing down in 2013.
"I plan on racing XTERRA Lake Las Vegas, the XTERRA Colorado Series, the XTERRA Utah Series, Nationals and Worlds," he said. "I might also try to make a couple races in the XTERRA Pocono Series, and the XTERRA Richmond."
If all goes well, he could run in more than a dozen XTERRA Trail Run events in 2013, spanning from Hawaii to Pennsylvania.
"What I like most about traveling to all of these different races is how they always bring new adventures and unique experiences into my life," he said. "I love seeing new things and meeting new people along the way. It's both an exhilarating and fun journey to be part of."
Burgunder is one of the most decorated runners in XTERRA Trail Run history. He has previously won age-group regional championships in New England (2009), Northern Ohio (2011) and Pocono (2011 and 2012). He entered his first XTERRA Trail Run in his then-home state of Pennsylvania in July of 2008 and said he "instantly became hooked."
