TIPS FOR THE TRAIL - BALANCING THE SUM OF THE WHOLE
It can be easy to get overwhelmed and fall short of our goals, especially when time seems to fly by faster and faster each year. My love of filling in each moment can sometimes turn into too much. I forget sometimes that I am completely human, not a machine. I'm learning it is possible to run and race well, while meeting all other aspects of life with success. In order to live life as I prefer, I must have a plan. This way, I really can do it all.
Here is a solution to ensure we have the tools to thrive in life and enjoy the "Live More" lifestyle: create a master plan that incorporates both your training and life goals.
The training portion of the plan is important for optimal racing. This assists each person to live and train day by day, all while keeping a healthy perspective of the bigger picture. For most of us, though, there is much more to think about than training, racing and recovering. The reality is that family, work, and other life factors need to coexist and intertwine with our outdoor pursuits. It is possible to live a full happy life amidst all of these obligations and still get outside to run and enjoy nature with health. This is why it is also important to creatively integrate your yearly life goals with your training plan.
BE A CHAMPION TO YOUR FEET
You train hard for XTERRA success. You give it your all, sacrificing week after week to make your personal best. So do your feet.
Did you know that the impact forces on your feet during running exceed 2.5x your body weight? That cycling compresses your arches at each pedal stroke- over 3600 to 5400 pedal strokes per hour? Your feet endure this – for you.
Reward them with plenty of TLC. Stretching, massage and flexibility exercises for your feet, ankles and legs keep your most important support team going strong. Don’t neglect your footwear. Keep it well fitting and suited tor your foot-type, gait and riding style.
Consider treating your feet with high-quality footbeds that are suited to your unique foot shape and needs. Footbalance offers a variety of affordable, custom footbeds for individualized fit, support and cushioning. A patented core offers varying levels of dynamic support, and you pick the cushioning you like: from minimal to extra-max.
Visit Footbalance at XTERRA to try the latest in footbed technology and customization: from self-molding QuickFit footbeds to rapidly-custom molded footbeds formed to your unique feet – on the spot, in under 10 minutes.

WELSCH SISTERS RETURN TO TEXAS SERIES
Kaytlynn and Heather Welsch had quite the trail running journey in 2012. Precocious performances in their home state of Texas led to national and international races on the XTERRA Trail Run circuit, as well as national and international publicity through the media.
The pre-teen sensations will run again in 2013. Kaytlynn, 12, and Heather, 10, plan to be regular participants in the 2013 XTERRA Texas Trail Run Series. It will start with the XTERRA Eco Lonestar Trail Run 15K on March 10.
"The plan this year was to get (Kaytlynn) into more duathlons," said their father, Rodney. "And she is off to a good start as she was the overall female winner in a duathlon last week. But I know where her heart is, as she had to choose between the Eco Lone Star, and the Blue Northern Duathlon, and she choose to be out on the trail."
The sisters gained national attention last summer when Kaytlynn placed first overall at an XTERRA Texas Series race, and Heather placed third. Success in other races led to a lengthy feature in the New York Times. Just this month, the family was featured on NBC's Rock Center With Brian Williams.
Interestingly enough, Kaytlynn did not get to see the original airing of the television program because she had a school dance that same night.
"I had to leave and pick Kaytlynn up from the dance, so we both missed seeing the show," Rodney said. "But we watched it later on the Internet."

XTERRA TRAIL RUNS NOT JUST ABOUT GOING LONG
Just about every event that is part of the XTERRA Trail Run Series features a long course and a short course to accommodate the various levels of runners across the country.
Bree Bielenberg is proof that fast runners are abundant on the short courses, as well as the long.
Bielenberg has been dominating the short course races in the XTERRA Arizona Trail Run Series throughout the 2012-13 season. She has been the top female finisher on the short course at every race so far during the Arizona Series season.
"I began the XTERRA races when I started working for PowerBar … now I am hooked," said Bielenberg, who resides in Phoenix. "I've also started trail racing in other series, but they lack the XTERRA craziness. I love that when there is a river, XTERRA will make sure you run through it. If there is a mountain, you know you will run to the top."
Most elite runners enter the long course races, as those are the ones that count for age-group points for each series. However, Bielenberg has her reasons for choosing the short courses.
"I am a Field Market Associate for the PowerBar account at active.com," she explained. "One of my job duties is to take pictures so that PowerBar can see their product in use. I get some excellent action shots of the long course runners, but to do this, I can only run short courses. I have every intention of upgrading to the longer courses when the opportunity permits."
STILL TIME FOR EARLY BIRDS AT TRAIL RUN WORLDS
Next week will be the last week to receive the early bird registration discount for the 2013 XTERRA Trail Run World Championship in Hawaii.
This year’s event is scheduled for November 24 at Kualoa Ranch on the island of Oahu, and it is open to runners of all ages and skill levels.
The event will feature more than 2,000 runners from around the world at the unique setting that only Kualoa Ranch can offer.
The 21-kilometer trail serves as the world championship course, but it truly is an event for one and all as there are also 10K, 5K and “Adventure Walk” courses, as well as a “Kids Sprint.”
The main draw of the event is Kualoa Ranch – a spectacular venue that is normally closed to the public. The scenic backdrop at the ranch has been used for several major TV and movie productions, including Godzilla, Jurassic Park, 50 First Dates, Pearl Harbor, LOST and Hawaii Five-O.

GEORGIA IS SOLD OUT THIS WEEKEND
There is just one race on the XTERRA Trail Run schedule this weekend, and it’s a big one. The XTERRA Thrill in the Hills Trail Run will feature a capacity field of 575 runners at Fort Yargo State Park in Winder, Georgia.
The race has been sold out for several weeks, as it is considered the highlight event on the 2012-13 schedule for the XTERRA Georgia Trail Run Series. It is the only event in the Georgia Series that offers both a full-marathon (42K) and half-marathon (21K) course.
All runners who complete the event are invited to stay for a post-race pizza party at the race site.
The Thrill in the Hills race is the fifth of six races on the 2012-13 schedule for the Georgia Series. The final race will be the XTERRA Deep South Trail Run in June. That race will likely sell out as well, so register early at www.dirtyspokes.com.
