According to race director Sandro Salerno, “The XTERRA Italy Xduro is a race for skilled runners who want a real challenge against Mother Nature. RACE RECAP - XTERRA MISSION GORGE TRAIL RUN
Sunny skies set the stage for a record breaking day at the sold-out, 600 strong XTERRA Mission Gorge Trail Run held on February 1st in San Diego. Triathlon legend Heather Fuhr, 41 of Encinitas, beat her own 2008 record in the 15km race by almost 3 minutes crossing the finish line in just 1:11:40. 2008 XTERRA SoCal Regional Champion, Beth Gerdes, 29, made her hometown proud coming in at 1:16:03 while Paula Newby-Fraser, 47 also of Encinitas, who has been named one of the Top 5 Pro Female Athletes of the last 25 years, took third place in 1:20:33.
It was 19-year old Brandon Dugan of Rancho Cucamonga who captured the men’s 15km title and fastest time of the day in 1:04:45. Carlsbad resident Kevin Gillotti, 39, followed just three minutes later to take second place.
The winners of the 5km event also blew through the previous records set in 2008 as Herve Pastre, 63, and Brienne Thomson, 30, clocked times of 18:46 and 20:38 respectively. Bakersfield resident Pastre was able to edge out last year’s winner for the record by a mere two seconds while Thomson, a San Diego local, crushed last year’s record by almost 4 minutes.
