TRULY AN INTERNATIONAL EVENT
While Americans Max King (Oregon) and Morgan Arritola (Idaho) took top honors at the 2011 XTERRA Trail Run World Championship in Hawaii on December 4, there was a significant influx of international runners this year.
Most notable, eight runners from outside of the United States earned age-group world titles: five from Canada, two New Zealand, and one from the Czech Republic. Another age-group world champion came in from Japan, but still lists Hawaii as a home address.
The second-place finishers overall for both the men and women were international entries: Petr Pechek from the Czech Republic placed second to King, and Lucy Smith (pictured) of Canada placed second to Arritola.
"There are a lot of trail runners here in British Columbia (Canada), so it was nice to see a lot of them doing well and adding this race to their winter vacations," said Susan Reynolds, a Canadian who won the women's 45-49 age group. "I was not expecting to see so many fellow Canadians, but glad to see us so well represented."
PUZEY PULLS AN IMPRESSIVE DOUBLE
Thomas Rivers Puzey knew he wanted to run in two big races in Hawaii in December. He didn’t know he would have to do it seven days apart.
Not that it mattered, as Puzey turned in an impressive “double.” On December 4, Puzey placed fourth overall at the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship. Exactly one week later, he placed eighth overall (and first among all amateurs) in the Honolulu Marathon.
“I planned on doing both races, and I’ve been training for it,” said Puzey, who is a student at Brigham Young University-Hawaii. “But I didn’t realize how hard it would be to do the races a week apart. It was pretty tough.”
Puzey said the fast pace of the XTERRATrail Run World Championship took its toll on his body, and he contemplated withdrawing from the Honolulu Marathon. “I felt like I got run over by a truck the day after the XTERRA race,” he said. “I was hurting for five days after.”
What’s more, Puzey said he aggravated a knee injury and was forced to run the marathon in pain for almost the entire course. “I was a little worried about that,” he said. “But I really wanted to do both races, so I kind of figured it out and just ran.”
Because Puzey qualifies as a student resident at the BYU-Hawaii campus, he was considered the top Hawaii finisher at both the XTERRA Trail Run and the Honolulu Marathon.
REITER TURNS FIRST XTERRA TRAIL RUN INTO A WIN
Chuck Reiter finally got a chance to run in an XTERRA Trail Run, and now he regrets not trying it earlier.
Reiter won the XTERRA Crystal Cove Trail Run on Sunday, December 11, topping a capacity field of close to 500 runners at Laguna Beach, California.
Reiter, 29, said he had been planning to enter an XTERRA Trail Run for several years, but this was his first actual entry.
“I’ve known about XTERRA for a while, and it’s always been on my list,” he said. “But there was always something else that came up. My friend reminded me about this race and so I finally signed up. It was great – wish I would have done it years ago.”
Reiter completed the 15-kilometer long course in 1 hour, 8 minutes, 13 seconds. He took the lead early in the race and then held on at the end for the victory.
