XTERRA TRAIL RUN SERIES UNDERWAY IN 2012
The XTERRA Trail Run Series got started for 2012 with a pair of races in the Western United States last weekend.
The XTERRA Boney Mountain Trail Run in Southern California and the XTERRA White Tanks Trail Run in Arizona were both held on Sunday, January 8 (see below for race recaps from both events).
Those two races were the first of more than 60 XTERRA Trail Run Series events around the country in 2012. Seventeen different states will host an XTERRA Trail Run event in 2012.
Every race in the series is open to runners of all ages and skill levels, and most events feature a short course and a long course.
The series will culminate with the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship in Utah in September, and then the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship in Hawaii in December.

NEW YEAR BRINGS NEW WINNERS TO ARIZONA SERIES
The XTERRA Arizona Trail Run Series welcomed the new year by welcoming a couple of new winners.
Keith Walters and Marisa Asplund took top honors at the XTERRA White Tanks Trail Run at Waddell, Arizona, on Sunday, January 8.
Walters was the overall winner, completing the 20-kilometer course in a record time of 1 hour, 22 minutes, 44 seconds. He placed second overall at the previous Arizona Series race last October.
"The course was very challenging with some intense climbing," said Walters, who is from Scottsdale, Arizona. "The downhills were very rocky and steep, and the weather was perfect."

Walters stayed with the lead pack for most of the race, and then broke ahead by himself in the final mile. John Fitzgerald of Missoula, Montana, placed second with a time of 1:23:37. Sean Hulburt, who won the previous Arizona Series race, placed third in 1:26:27. Kevin Tuck, a 55-year-old from Salt Lake City, Utah, was an impressive fourth overall in 1:29:28.
Asplund , who is from Durango, Colorado, took top honors in the women's division. She completed the course in 1:38:54 in her first try at an XTERRA Trail Run.
HESCH, COLBURN PREVAIL AT SOCAL SERIES RACE
Christian Hesch proved his worth as a marathon road runner and one-mile track runner in 2011. In his first race of 2012, he proved that he is quite a trail runner as well.
Hesch won the XTERRA Boney Mountain Trail Run on Sunday, January 8, at Point Mugu State Park in Newbury, Calif. More than 550 runners of various ages participated in the event.
"I've never run so hard in my life," said Hesch, who is 32 and resides in North Hollywood, Calif. "It gives me a whole new respect for what those trail racers go through."
Hesch completed the half-marathon (21 kilometers) course in 1 hour, 33 minutes, 1 second. It was his first XTERRA Trail Run experience, and one he said he will never forget.
"Did I mention it was insane?" he said with a laugh. "Turning onto the last minor road portion with less than one mile to go … into 30 mph headwind! Who forgot that one in the course description?"

Hesch and Patrick Baldwin broke ahead of the field early in the race, and stayed with each other for most of the course. Hesch took the lead in the final mile and held off Baldwin for the victory. Baldwin, who is from Encinitas, Calif., placed second with a time of 1:33:13. Jonathan Toker from Malibu, Calif., was third in 1:35:16.
