PREVIEWING THE NEW KAPALUA TRAIL

By Amy Bennett Eck

Editor’s note: The inaugural XTERRA Kapalua Trail Runs is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 22, at Kapalua, Maui. The event will feature three separate runs – Duke’s Beach House XTERRA 10K, Hula Grill XTERRA 5K, and Kimo’s XTERRA Keiki K. Elite runner Amy Bennett Eck had a chance to preview the new 10K course, and below is her description. The event is open to runners of all ages and skill levels, and registration is open online at www.xterramaui.com.

Kapalua CourseXTERRA is all about challenge, and the new XTERRA Kapalua Trail Runs is nothing short of epic!  With over 2,500 feet of climbing in less than seven miles ... you better be ready to work.  You will escape to your own wonderland as you slalom through turns, make a technical descent through a row of trees, run around a lake, traverse the Mahana Ridge, and struggle across the beach to the finish.

The Valley Isle's unique and diverse climate makes the weather as irregular as the course.  As trade winds come across the island, they are altered by the mountains, valleys and slopes to create varying wind speeds, cloud formations and rainfall.  Be ready for anything -- scorching heat, heavy rain and mud, or chilling winds crossing the peak of the course.  While the course is extremely tough, it is also amazingly beautiful. This is paradise.

XTERRA FOOTWEAR AT KAPALUA

XTERRA Footwear will be available at Kapalua, Maui, next week for the XTERRA World Championship. An XTERRA Gear store will be set up at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua, and there will be several specials.

Ed ReedMost notable, the XT2.0 model will be on sale for $39 per pair. It is a great shoe that is lighter and more supportive than anything you may have tried before. With its exclusive 360Tech foot lock, the shoe seems to form to your foot, give you that custom feel.

It is the same shoe that NFL All-Pro safety Ed Reed (pictured) of the Baltimore Ravens uses for his preseason training, and he has been featured in ads promoting the XTERRA shoes. Reed has been wearing XTERRA Footwear for the past three years, and can’t see himself training in anything else. “They are the lightest, most comfortable shoes I have ever worn,” he said.

The XR1.0 running shoes will also be available on Maui next week. Most sizes will be available, although colors could be limited.

And here is a note from the management team at XTERRA Footwear:

“We would like to thank all the XTERRA fans for running with us so far this year, and thank them for their patience while waiting for the new colors and sizes.  Due to some factory hiccups, there have been some delays, but everything is resolved and the new colors should be arriving before Thanksgiving. We thank everyone for their patience, and there will be a promo mailer going out as soon as they arrive.  We will be doing 2 new colors in the XR1.0 models for women; for men, we will be redoing the Black/Slime model, and plan to add a new color.”
