The XTERRA USA Championship is the culmination of a series of more than 50 qualifying events across the US that award points to the top athletes in XTERRA's eight regions. In addition to the championship, XTERRA offers races for trail runners, as well as the XTERRA Nevada race. Pick up tips from the pros at one of our XTERRA University clinics or enjoy the XTERRA Expo with food, climbing walls and product displays. Kids can get into the fun at the XTERRA Base Camp with Shimano Youth Series races, skills challenges and more! The XTERRA USA Championship is open to qualified amateur athletes from the US. Here is how to qualify. Non-qualfied athletes can race on the famed championship course by signing up for the XTERRA Nevada race, which takes place the day before nationals. Top finishers in each age division are awarded a coveted slot to the XTERRA World Championship at the Makena Resort on Maui where 500 of the world's best competitors vie for the championship title. Pro athletes from the US with a valid pro license can compete for the US Championship title. International athletes may compete for prize money, but are not eligible for the US Championship title. The swim: ACCESS TO LAKE TAHOE IS RESTRICTED TO HYATT PROPERTY ONLY. Competitors and spectators must not use Ski Beach or any other access point at any time. NEW SWIM TO TRANSITION ROUTE - Exit the swim and run through Hyatt property, behind the cottages to Lakeshore Blvd. Run the side walk to Ski Beach and cross the road into Village Green and transition. The mountain bike: Sixteen hundred vertical feet of climbing welcomes competitors on Tunnel Creek Road. Riders ascend three miles to the Flume Trail, one of the most scenic mountain bike trails in the world. The Flume is known for its grand views of Lake Tahoe's azure blue waters and mountain peaks to the south and west. Riders who get distracted by the view might end up casualties of this 4.4-mile section of single track, which includes two mandantory dismounts to cross rocky outcrops. After The Flume, a short challengeing ascent leads to Marlette Lake and the start of another leg-burning climb. Reaching the south end of the lake, riders switch to granny gear and head up Hobart Road. There are a few sandy sections along the way. Next is a short, big-gear roll and a left turn onto Tahoe Rim Trail for 6.6 miles of Tahoe's finest single track. Just past the Twin Lakes, turn left to Tunnel Creek Road for a fast and furious descent across all kinds of terrain: sandy sections, riparian areas with great traction, high-speed lanes and a few water bar whoopdies. This section will either showcase riders' descending skills or throw them over the handlebars. At the end of Tunnel Creek Road things flatten out as you return back on Lakeshore Drive to Village Green and T2. The trail run: This run course has more twists and turns than an Agatha Christie novel. Just when you think you have a rhythm, mother nature will put a fallen tree or a boulder or four different creek gully crossings and two log crossing smack in your way. The course is tight and runs among giant pines with numerous switchbacks where you'll be able to see what your competition is up to. Half-way through you'll come back to the main compound where the crowd will cheer you on. First time around we'll give you a bracelet: the second time around, show it to me and we'll send you home to the finish. And you'll be happy to see it. *Course is subject to change. Just yesterday this rustic mountain town was freezing, covered in snow, and the bike course high in the Sierra Nevada range looked like it was comfortably in the middle of winter. In sharp contrast, after the 9am swim start this morning in the 58-degree crystal clear and calm waters fronting the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe, a sunny 70-degree day smiled on the competition. For Stoltz and Whitmore, the warm weather brought a dose of redemption as both reclaimed the XTERRA titles that slipped away from them a year ago. Last season Stoltz (who won this race in 2001, ’02 and ’03) broke his back and wrist pre-riding while Whitmore (who won four straight from 2002-05) suffered through a series of flats that left her out of the title chase. This year both Stoltz and Whitmore finished with perfect 400-point scores in the five-stop XTERRA U.S. Pro Series and thus earned $19,000 for their efforts today ($14,000 for winning the Series and $5,000 for winning the race).
Whitmore echoed that sentiment… “Last year’s struggles here and in Maui were probably the best thing for me because I was able to refocus, recommit, and find that drive that I think I had lost.” READ FULL REPORT

Their collective advice is insightful, colorful, and sometimes hilarious and we’ve spliced them all together in a series of six short videos broken down by topic that you can view on XTERRA.TV or XTERRA’s YouTube channel. Jamie Whitmore came on strong this year and battled all morning against the native New Zealander Jennifer Smith in what can be called nothing less than a "classic" XTERRA race. The two switched leads on the mountain bike climb, then back again on the downhill and throughout the run it was up in the air until the last stretch when Whitmore turned on everything she had to take the win. Whitmore finished in a time 2:59:18 and just behind every step of the way was Smith with a time of 3:01:26. In third place, and taking home her best XTERRA finish is first year XTERRA racer Dara Marks Marino from Flagstaff, Ariz. with a time of 3:04:47. Last year's first place finisher, Melanie McQuaid finished fifth behind 2002 XTERRA World Champion Candy Angle (4th). Update #8 WE HAVE A WINNER!!! Conrad "The Caveman" Stoltz said he was going to make a comeback and what a race he has had. After holding the top spot this season in the Pro Series and leading the bike and run all morning he has finished the Lake Tahoe course in 2:34:08. "I more thankful than anything," Stoltz expressed as he broke the ribbon. "I'm so lucky and just really, really happy to be here and able to race again." In second place with a time of 2:35:40 is Mike Vine, who made up more than a minute on his second lap of the trail run on the heels of Stoltz. And in third place is Andrew Noble with a time of 2:37:18. Fourth place - Jossiah Middaugh Now onto the ladies... Jamie Whitmore has the lead after the first lap, with Jennifer Smith not far behind and Dara Marks Marino in third. Update #7 Things are heating up in Lake Tahoe as the men start the two-lap 10- kilometer forest trail run through Incline Village and the women near the second transition back in town. Afternoon temperatures are rising quickly, the sun is shining and as always Lake Tahoe is providing a thrilling USA XTERRA Championshisp Out on the trail run it's Conrad Stoltz in first place and finishing up his first lap of the technical course, followed closely behind by: * Mike Vine in second The women have hit the pavement and going into the second transition the lead is up for grabs as Jamie Whitmore and Jennifer Smith battle back and forth for first (with less than 20 seconds between them) and Dara Marks Marino holds onto third. Update #6 As the men finish up the downhill the women aren't far behind. And what a race it is... Up front is our NEW LEADER Jennifer Smith from New Zealand, followed only 15-seconds behind by Jamie Whitmore. The two women are riding nearly side-by-side heading on the downhill. Two minutes behind them Dara Marks Marino and Melanie McQuaid battle for third, with Candy Angle close behind in fifth. And back in Incline Village as the men reach the highway it's "The Caveman - Conrad Stoltz" with a time of 42:52 - a solid three minutes ahead on the pack. Following him Brian Smith, from Colorado has moved into second with a current time of 45:36. Behind Smith, Andrew Noble has dropped back to third place with a time of 46:30 with Josiah Middaugh and Seth Wealing following. Update #5 We're onto the second leg of the mountain bike course - the famous aspen lined route near Marlette Lake. It's a leg-burning climb up Hobart Road to the lookout at nearly 9,000-feet above sea level (the highest point of the Lake Tahoe course). Reports from the top of blue skies, warmer temps and calm winds are making for a perfect ride. All the athletes are looking fresh and geared up as they head into the decent. In the lead at 10:20 a.m. is the "The Caveman" Conrad Stoltz, who's built up a two-minute gap over our new second place rider Mike Vine from Canada, who posted the fastest bike split time here last year. Behind the leaders are: * Andrew Noble in third Update #4 The women have reached the top!! It's Melanie McQuaid, who captured her first Pro Series crown on the same course one year ago and then went on to win in Maui at the World Championships. A close one-minute back is Jamie Whitmore, who finished fifth last year and is currently ranked number one in the 2007 U.S. Pro Series standings. Following the leaders are: * Jennifer Smith from New Zealand Update #3 As the morning continues on, all of the athletes are out of the the water and have hit the bike course - a grueling 32-kilometer, single loop course following one of Lake Tahoe's toughest routes. The first section of the Lake Tahoe course to greet riders is a 1,600-foot climb up sandy Tunnel Creek Road to the famed Flume Trail. Once riders reach the top it's onto a 4.5-mile section of single track known for it's exposed crossings of sheer rock faces and incredible views of the Big Blue. And... Conrad Stoltz is in the lead!! He's fighting hard to win back his title after a horrible crash in practice took him out of the running last year. Nearly two-minutes behind is Andrew Noble, a native Australian who ranked third over all in last year's Pro Series. Behind Noble in third place is Seth Wealing. Stay tuned for updates as the women hit the bike course. Update #2 With blue skies, clear waters and chilling morning temperatures topping 40 degrees more than 400 athletes have entered the water and the race is on in Incline Village Nevada! Leading the swim, and first out of the water this morning was no surprise Bruce Gennari, followed by Seth Weiling - hoping to hold on to his first place title from last year. Course Description - Update #1 Race updates will be posted as they come in from the course. Refresh this page to load the newest update. Event Photography
