There are a lot of legendary tales about the New Jersey Shore and New Jersey Pine Barrens areas.  Maybe your familiar with the recent "boom, boom, boom," of the stereo pumping from Snooky and the rest of the "GTL" crew on MTV or Tony Soprano dumping bodies out in the Pine Barren woods on HBO.  However, one local legend may be scarier than both of them.  Of course I am talking about the JERSEY DEVIL.  It is time to bring this local mythological figure back to notoriety and I can think of no better way than to name an XTERRA in his honor.

Speaking of notoriety, the Greater New Jersey Shore Area has experienced an explosion of growth in the triathlon scene over the past several years.  This is in part due to the continued growth of the Sandy Hookers and Jersey Shore Triathlon Clubs.  However, there has been one thing missing from the scene, XTERRA.  Well, XTERRA, is now coming to the Jersey Shore in the form of the XTERRA JERSEY DEVIL on May 1, 2011.

Jersey Devil LakeThe Joseph A. Citta Scout Reservation in Barnegat, NJ will be the host of the Inaugural XTERRA JERSEY DEVIL.  Located 30 miles North of Atlantic City in the Pine Barrens of NJ, the Scout Reservation provides a perfect location.  The May 1 date also provides a great opportunity for all those locals coming out of the woods from their winter mountain bike rides to test their skills before they trade their mountain bikes in for their tri-bikes and the busy Jersey Shore Area road tri-season.

Race Director, Bob Horn, a veteran XTERRA competitor, has laid out a great early season course.  The course consists of a 1/2 mile swim in a crystal clear, clean, fresh water lake (pictured).  Athletes will then run a short 1/4 mile to T1.  Next, is the 12 mile mountain bike section, heading out of the Scout Camp and into the connecting trails of Wells Mills County Park and the neighboring fire roads / trails.  Trails on the bike vary from wide and sandy, packed down and fast, tight single track, and a few little bridge crossings. Finally, athletes will arrive back at T2 for the trail run section.  Here begins the 4 mile run winding out of the Scout Camp and into a new area of neighboring trails.  Look out for some old remnants of the legendary Jersey Devil throughout the run, before finishing back up in the Scout Reservation and the Finish.

The XTERRA JERSEY DEVIL will benefit the Joseph A. Citta Scout Reservation (Jersey Shore Council, Boy Scouts of America), Wells Mills Park (Ocean County Park System),  Amity Acres Day Camp (Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore), and Ocean County Open Space.  So, come on out on May 1, 2011, and enjoy a great course, great competition, supporting some great causes, and experience the vibe of XTERRA.    Check out more info at www.xterrajerseydevil.com and find us on Facebook, search XTERRA Jersey Devil.

Course Preview Days set for April 9 and April 23, 8:30am, meet at race site, come ready to ride and run.
