XTERRA Malaysia - June 13th

Canadian XTERRA star Mike Vine is headed back to Teluk Chempedak, Kuantan to defend his XTERRA Malaysia Championship on June 13th.  Vine will be up against XTERRA Saipan and Japan champ Sam Gardner as well as XTERRA New Zealand Champ Scott Thorne (last year’s runner-up).

Mike VineThe 2009 race was XTERRA’s first in Southeast Asia and got rave reviews from Vine, who said “Top notch! This event was a huge success with big backing and major media too. It sold-out early with 500 racers and they really nailed it.  For a first time event, this race was just totally amazing. We even had the Royal Prince of Panang there who watched the whole event."

The race combines a 1.5km swim in the warm waters of the South China Sea followed by a 30km mountain bike through a wide mix of technical singletrack, wide open plantation trails and scenic village locales, and a 10km sandy beach/rainforest trail run that finishes under swaying casuarinas trees.

“The course has lots of rooty slick jungle, beach sections and even a tour through the zoo,” said Vine.

Kuantan is a 2.5 hour drive from Kuala Lumpur (or a 45-minute flight) and is known for its lush rainforest jungle and is home to the country’s National Park.  Just off the beach you can jungle trek through the Forest Reserve onto Pelindung Beach and visit the Teruntum park which has a mini zoo for children.
