XTERRA West Championship Preview

The first big race of the season – the XTERRA West Championship – returns to Loews Lake Las Vegas Resort and the lunar landscape in Henderson, Nevada on April 25 and from now ‘til Feb. 15 participants can sign-up for just $75.

Note that this is the only regional on the west coast in 2010, it awards slots to the XTERRA World Championship in Maui, dishes out big points for those chasing regional titles in the America Tour, provides age groupers with the chance to rub shoulders with XTERRA Pros, and talk about an eclectic course!

The swim starts underneath beautiful palm trees on a white sand beach with a luxurious Mediterranean style resort on one side and the 8th hole of Reflection Bay golf course on the other. Then you get out of the water and enter a virtual moonscape with the various shades of red, sand, and grey one racer described as “lunar technical on baked clay.”

It’s brutal, no doubt, but nothing that’s worth having comes easy!  After the race competitors can jump in the hotel pool and celebrate with the TEAM Unlimited crew who are operating this event with the help of Sunset racing.

Improvements for this year’s race include more aid stations, a Zorrel tee, and the transition and finish line right at the resort with plenty of parking, shade, and amenities.

There are plenty of inexpensive ways to get to and stay in-and-around sin city, and racers can even stay right at Loews Lake Las Vegas Resort for $139 a night.

New options this year include $45 XTERRA Sport half-distance and XTERRA Duathlon races, plus 5km, 10km, and 21km trail runs starting at $20 (all part of the early bird special thru Feb. 15).
