Saturday Races at the XTERRA Winter World Championship



XTERRA Winter Snowboard Dash for CashJustin Hurd from Fort Collins, CO and Sara McMahan from Incline Village, NV won the men’s and women’s XTERRA Snowboard Dash-4-Cash race for the second year in a row on a magnificent clear and sunny 40-degree day at Snowbasin Resort in Ogden, Utah.

Both Hurd and McMahan walked away with $500 cash for their efforts. Hurd, a professional triathlete (he finished 50that the Ironman World Champs last year), finished in 16:22 – just 25 seconds in front of runner-up Keegan Ruthkamp from Chillicothe, OH. McMahan was the top female in 20:16, two-minutes faster than Christy Jo McFarland of Ogden.

“This place is for real,” exclaimed Hurd, who use to work ski patrol at Northstar in Lake Tahoe, NV where he grew up. “The facilities here are just amazing and the vertical is incredible…it’s a class of a resort.”

The snowboard race included a sprint to start, the two downhills sections with two climbs in-between where riders had to carry their boards several hundred feet uphill.

SCHEEFER/HICKEL WIN XTERRA SKI MOUNTAINEERING 12K, COPPOCK/WEWER WIN 8K

Randonnee ski specialist Travis Scheefer from Crested Butte, CO won the men’s elite ski mountaineering 12km race in 1:10:51 as a tune-up for tomorrow’s XTERRA Winter World Championship, with last year’s Winter Worlds Champ Brian Smith (Gunnison, CO) just 10 seconds behind in 1:11:01.

Using climbing skins, ski mountaineering racers climbed 1,300 vertical feet up the mountain to the first of three checkpoints where they took off their skins and raced down to the next stop and climb. Subsequent uphills were roughly 700 feet, then 300 feet for a total of 2,300 feet of climbing.

Bre Hickel of Salt Lake City, UT won the women’s 12k in 1:53:15, roughly 16 minutes ahead of last year’s winner Erika Sweigert of Victor, Idaho. Michael Tobin (Boise, ID) won the 40+ division in 1:17:14.

Erik Coppock of Longmont, CO won the men’s 8k race in 56:59, a minute faster than Rob Rowley from Kaysville, UT, while Katie Wewer of Eden, UT won the women’s 8k in 1:05:43, almost 10 minutes faster than Ellen Gallant of Ogden.

LONAC/SCHWARZWALDER WIN XTERRA SNOWSHOE 10K, MUNNS/DICE WIN 5K

Marc Lonac from Fort Collins, CO won the XTERRA Snowshoe 10k in 40:08 while Caprice Schwarzwalder from Ogden won the women’s race in 50:42. Marc Munns won the 5k in 37:49 while 12- year-old Kylie Osguthorpe from Ogden won the women’s division in 47:07.

FIGI WINS XTERRA SKATE SKI 8K

Rolf Figi from Salt Lake City, UT won the 8km XTERRA Skate Ski competition in 22:34, followed by Peter Hanson from Minneapolis, MN in 23:26.
