'Tis the Season to XTERRA at Snowbasin

XTERRA ACTION IN SoCAL THIS WEEKEND...

On Saturday Competitor Magazine hosts the 17th annual Endurance Sports Awards, dubbed the "Academy Awards for Endurance Sports" by Entertainment Tonight.  The finest and most inspiration athletes from triathlon, cycling, and running will gather at Sea World in San Diego to celebrate another memorable year in the world of lifestyle sports.  One of the awards recognizes the best off-road triathlete of the year, an honor Conrad “the Caveman” Stoltz took home last year after winning his third XTERRA World Title in Maui.  Other past winners include Melanie McQuaid (2006), Nicolas Lebrun (2005), and Jamie “J-Dawg” Whitmore (who won the first two in 2003 and 2004).  XTERRA itself was honored as the ESA’s Event of the Year in 2002.

On Sunday morning many of the awards ceremony attendees will roll out of bed and head down to Mission Trails Regional Park just outside of downtown San Diego for the XTERRA Mission Gorge 5km and 15km trail runs.  Last year Heather Fuhr won the 15km race less than 12 hours after being given the “Competitor Magazine Triathlon Legend” award.  Stoltz was at last year’s race too, and it rained so hard he said it was “like running in snot!”   The signature feature is “the thousand steps” at mile six that climb up and over one of the several hills competitors will face.  Weather is supposed to be perfect and another sell-out is on the horizon, so interested runners should sign up now.

'TIS THE SEASON TO XTERRA AT SNOWBASIN...

It’s that time of year to frolic in the snow, and the XTERRA Winter World Championship weekend at Snowbasin Resort in Utah is offering up five different wacky winter adventures to choose from.

On Saturday, March 7 there’s 8km and 12km ski mountaineering (randonee) races, 5km and 10km snowshoe races, a 10km skate ski, and an edgy snowboard dash-for-cash with $500 going to the men’s and women’s winners.  Great registration deals abound – as competitors can do any two of the above for $40 or any three for $60.

Of course the main event is Sunday and combines running, mountain biking, snowshoeing and ski mountaineering into one crazy winter adventure race.  Racers can go it alone and vie for the $10,000 in prize money or race as part of a team with a few friends.

“Even when I was suffering I was thinking this was a cool event,” said adventure racing phenom Michael Tobin after last year’s race.
Plus, every night in Ogden XTERRA is hosting get-togethers with videos, music, great food, and good times.
