1996 AquaTerra Latest Release on XTERRA.TV

1996 AQUATERRA LATEST RELEASE ON XTERRA.TV

The first-ever XTERRA off-road triathlon was actually called AquaTerra when it made its debut on the south shore of Maui in 1996, and now you can see that race unfold - as if you were there 12 years ago - by watching the original Fox Sports broadcast in its entirety on www.XTERRA.TV.  It was that first race - with racing legends like Jimmy Riccitello, Mike Pigg, Ned Overend, Scott Tinley, Michellie Jones, Shari Kain, Sue Latshaw and others - that sparked nationwide interest in mountain bike triathlons and fueled the growth of the sport from that one race to more than 100 in 15 countries this year.  With XTERRA.TV you now have the chance to go back in time and listen to race commentators Dan Cook, Mark Allen, Craig Hummer, and Peter Graves break down the racing action from the original XTERRA.  Each month XTERRA.TV will upload new content online from current events to classics from TEAM Unlimited TV's archives.

XTERRA stars Brian and Jenny Smith won the overall men’s and women’s titles at the Crested Butte Bank XTERRA off-road triathlon near their hometown of Gunnison, Colorado on Sunday. Brian, the XTERRA Winter World Champion and top U.S. finisher at XTERRA World’s last year, finished in 1:58:33 – more than two minutes ahead of runner-up Branden Rakita.  A strong contingent of Colorado-based XTERRA stars turned out for the race with Cody Waite placing third, followed by Spencer Powlison, Will Kelsay and Dave Messenheimer.

Jenny, who also won this race last year, crossed the finish line in 2:12:15, less than a minute ahead of XTERRA Southeast Champion Shonny Vanlandingham from Durango.   Three-time XTERRA World Champ Melanie McQuaid of Victoria, B.C. finished third.

Michael Melley from Chandler, AZ won the amateur race (8th overall) in 2:12:38 while Jill Sorensen of Breckenridge, CO was the top age group female in 2:32:47.

EDSALL, SHAHBOZ WIN FIRST COAST IN FLORIDA

Drew Edsall’s trip all the way from Durango, CO paid off for the 27-year old as he finished the XTERRA First Coast off-road tri with the fastest time of the day on July 27 in Atlantic Beach, FL. His 1:38:06 was just enough to edge out Omar Fraser, 28, from Birmingham, AL who finished just 39 seconds later.  Joyce Shahboz, 37, from Alachua, FL had the fastest time in the women’s event coming in at 1:55:52. After coming in 3rd in her age group last year, Shahboz finished almost seven minutes ahead of May-li Cuypers, 42, from Belleair Bluffs, FL.
