XTERRA WORLDS/BEST RACE IN THE WORLD!: The XTERRA faithful have known it for years, but don’t take our word for it. In the Jan/Feb edition of Inside Triathlon Magazine the editors deemed the XTERRA World Championship on Maui “the most raucous, fun-loving race on the calendar of modern-day multisport.”
Inside the mag you’ll find a four-page layout filled with brilliant images of the 2007 race captured by IT photographer Don Karle. As the expression goes, a picture says a 1,000 words, and Karle’s tribute clearly speaks volumes about the allure of XTERRA’s ultimate race.
“The XTERRA World Championship of off-road racing attracts a close-knit community of international mud seekers, friendly dirt fanatics and overall supportive types-smile in Maui and someone will smile back. XTERRA is one big, happy family, and if you’ve never been, XTERRA Worlds is the most raucous, rollicking reunion in all the kingdom of multisport,” the magazine goes on to say.
XTERRA Boney Mountain Trail Run: The second annual XTERRA Boney Mountain Trail Run (a bona-fide butt kicking, heart wrenching, and endorphin producing off-road race) hits L.A. on Saturday, January 12th. This is only the second time Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa National and Pt. Mugu State Park is allowing an organized trail running event to take place in this pristine location.
The line-up for Saturday consists of two events, a 6K and a 21K half-marathon. The 6K-race takes runners along Sycamore Creek, zig-zagging throughout the creek bed all the way up. The half-marathon is one of the toughest around -- 90% of the course consists of single-track trails and with an elevation of 2,000+ feet, it gives new meaning to the phrase “runner’s high”.
Forget running in circles around a track, monotonous treadmill workouts, or killing your knees on the pavement! Come out to the Western edge of the Santa Monica Mountains; traverse beneath some amazing rock faces and past historic Indian lands spiced with spectacular ocean and mountain views.
Guests will be greeted by the smell of gourmet coffee and fresh cooked eggs – even if you’re not a runner, it’s one of the best breakfasts in town! Post-race enjoy a massage, complimentary refreshments and raffle prizes. Awards are given to the overall male and female winners as well as the top 3 males and females for each age group.
Proceeds from this event go to the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Founded in 1901, the hospital has been treating the most seriously ill and injured children in Los Angeles for more than a century.
Boney Mountain is the fourth of seven races in the hugely successful XTERRA SoCal Trail Run Series. The next event is the XTERRA Mission Gorge Trail Run (5k/15k) in San Diego on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 3.
Course map, directions, registration info, and further information can be found on the race website, www.trailrace.com. The XTERRA Boney Mountain Trail Run race also offers a Youth Outreach Program. The program focuses on introducing 12 to 17 year old students to the California State Parks and trail running.
First up, XTERRA Saipan: The “Crown Jewel” on March 8 in the Northern Mariana Islands is the first stop on the XTERRA Global Tour.
With its white sand beaches, warm water, jungle trails, and secret caves it’s easy to see how the XTERRA Saipan Championship has become an XTERRA classic. In 2008, there will be more than 100 XTERRA races in 16 countries…but none quite like this one!
The race starts with a 1.5-kilometer swim in the crystal clear waters fronting Micro Beach, follows with a 30k mountain bike ride that traverses island terrain to the top of Mount Tapotchau (the highest point on the island at 1,545 feet elevation) and finishes with a 12k trail run that takes competitors past World War II relics and through secret jungles and caves.
The event is a qualifier for the 2008 XTERRA World Championship held in Maui on October 26 - with 36 slots available to the top finishers in each age group. The race will also award points to amateur athletes racing in this year’s XTERRA America Tour.
The US $15,000 professional purse at the XTERRA Saipan Championship attracts some of the best multisport athletes on the planet. Plus, there’s the Tagaman Triathlon - the longest running triathlon in the Western Pacific (19 years now) the following Saturday on March 15. The two races provide a perfect early season training schedule for the adventurous triathlete.
In between XTERRA Saipan and Tagaman is the Saipan Sports Fest which includes a variety of triathlon clinics, runs, swims, trail runs, bbq's, and social outings.
