XTERRA Brazil reportMore than 300 professional and amateur athletes participated in Nissan Xterra Brazil Championship in Ilhabela on Sunday. Brazil is one of 11 countries in the XTERRA Global Tour, and the race in Ilhabela was the first XTERRA race in South America! This event proved that Brazilians really embrace human-powered sports. The organizers had 50 staff members, over 200 volunteers, and a whole lot of spectators that helped make this race a fantastic event! XTERRA Brazil banners were all over the streets and everywhere in the town of Ihabela, which has a resort look and feel. There was also a big expo area and sport clinics for the local kids. Down on the beach a huge, covered and elevated structure called “Great Ramp of Brazil” was built to function as a VIP viewing area. Riders and runners came off the beach, up and over the ramp, right in front of this viewing area. What a perfect spectator spot, huh? Nissan had 15 vehicles on the site for crew use, demos and display. (Nissan Xterra is considered a luxury vehicle in Brazil; it costs about three times more in Brazil compared to the U.S.) They also had a 2K test drive course in the jungle with deep mud and obstacles they had built into the course. Off-road was the theme of the day! The weather was very tropical and therefore perfect for the swim course. The run course went straight up and then straight down and the mountain bike course consisted of a ton of climbing. Jamie Whitmore almost didn’t make it to this amazing race, because her flight from Chicago was oversold. Whitmore finally got on the plane but had to leave her bike and bag behind. That didn’t stop her though, as she won the women’s race! On the men’s side, Conrad Stoltz raced as expected and became the first finisher. After the 1.5 km ocean swim, 30 km of mountain biking, and 11 km of trail running, athletes joined for dinner and after party in the tropical heat! |
