Conrad's mission
Conrad Stoltz once dominated XTERRA. It was his sport. From late in the 2001 season through the first race of 2003 he had won eight straight XTERRA Championship events, including two Pro Series titles and two World Championships. Then, he came in second in Richmond and third in Keystone before rebounding to win in Tahoe for the third straight year on September 28, 2003. That was his last XTERRA win in the U.S. He had mechanicals in Maui that denied him his third World title in ‘03, then in 2004 he was second in Richmond and Big Bear, sixth in Keystone, fifth in Tahoe, and another mechanical took him out of Maui.
The question now is can Conrad return to form, especially with the huge step-up in competition with the likes of Sylvain Dodet, Olivier Marceau, Josiah Middaugh, and a cast of others? We will soon see, but one thing is clear – Conrad’s goal for 2005 is simple – “Regain XTERRA Dominance”. Here is an excerpt from a recent letter Conrad wrote to sponsors and friends:
Strategy 2005:“After careful thought, planning and some soul searching on my part, coach Jan and I came up with a strategy for 2005: Regain XTERRA dominance. Training specifically for XTERRA meant retiring from ITU draft legal races and using the non-drafting road triathlons as preparation for XTERRA. Optimizing XTERRA performance also meant cutting back on the swim training (Yay!) and increasing bike mileage from 10 hours a week to about 16 hrs a week…”
