Volcano ash darkens Saipan
The Volcano on Anatahan Island, one of 14 tropical islands comprising the Northern Mariana Islands chain, erupted on Wednesday sending ash and gas to an altitude of 50,000 feet - the highest recording ever for the volcano. It also sent a black cloud of ash over Saipan, creating the somewhat spooky feeling of being nighttime during the middle of the day. Although the volcano has been erupting since 2003, locals say it's the first time they've ever seen an ash plume of that scale. The eruption was recorded at 3:30 a.m. and by late afternoon the skies had cleared up. The eruption is not expected to have any effect on race day conditions.
