Alabama Series Ready to Kickoff New XTERRA Trail Run Season

Cheaha State Park Trail Run is first event of 2010-11 season

Fall season is not just about football in Alabama.

The new season for the XTERRA Alabama Trail Run Series is scheduled to start on Sept. 19, and hundreds of runners are expected to participate in the three races that comprise the series.

"We had a great time introducing XTERRA trail runs to the people of Alabama last season," series director Tim Schroer said. "We're going to have three beautiful trails set up this season, and there will be opportunities for experts and beginners to run in these races."

The opening race in the series is the XTERRA Cheaha State Park Trail Run at Delta, Ala., on Sept. 19. The 10-kilometer (6.2 miles) course is highlighted by a climb up Cheaha Mountain to an elevation of more than 2,400 feet - meaning runners will reach the highest point in the state of Alabama.

Entry fee is $35, and it includes a long-sleeve dri-fit shirt. The entry fee rises to $40 on race day. To register, visit www.xterratrailrun.com or www.dirtyspokes.com.

The second race in the Alabama Series will be the XTERRA Mount Sano State Park Trail Run at Huntsville on Oct. 24. That race will offer a 15-kilometer course for experienced runners, and a separate 5-kilometer course for less-experienced runners or walkers.

The third, and final, race in the series will be the XTERRA Oak Mountain Trail Run at Pelham on Nov. 16. That race will offer a 21-kilometer course and a 10-kilometer course. All of the Alabama Series races will be completed in the fall, so the runners can expect cool conditions.

Cumulative points will be tallied throughout the season, and the top runner in each age group at the end of the season will receive a free entry to the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship in 2011.

Alabama is one of 11 regions set to host XTERRA trail run races during the 2010-11 season. The others are Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Long Island, North Carolina, Ohio, Philadelphia, Southern California and Texas.
