Geoghegan, Beckmann win Jamba Juice XTERRA MountainMan TriathlonStrong finishes in the run segment led Mark Geoghegan and Rachel Beckmann to victory in the Jamba Juice XTERRA MoutainMan Triathlon Saturday at Kualoa Ranch.
The course started with a 750-meter swim followed by a 20-kilometer mountain bike, then a 6-kilometer trail run. Around 150 endurance athletes participated in the triathlon. Geoghegan, 46, trailed Honolulu’s Chad Seymour by around three minutes entering the run segment, but took the lead in the final kilometer. “I’m a better runner than I am a biker or swimmer, and today’s course suited me quite well,” said Geoghegan, who is originally from Sydney, Australia, but has been residing in Honolulu for the last nine years. “It was a killer run, a lot of climbing and some pretty steep descents.” Seymour placed second, 33 seconds behind Geoghegan at 1:27:04. Douglas Perry of Kailua was third in 1:28:39.
“I’m kind of a spaz on the bike, so I was just trying to keep up,” Beckmann said. “I was able to pass (Dudley) early in the bike and held it.” Beckmann is originally from Connecticut, but is stationed in Hawaii with the U.S. Coast Guard. Dudley lost a few seconds when she fell off her bike during a downhill section. She finished the race with a bloody thigh, but still in second place with a time of 1:40:20. Patricia Havey of Honolulu was third in 1:42:35. The top finishers in the various age groups qualified to participate in the 2010 XTERRA World Championship off-road triathlon at Maui on Oct. 24. A total of 66 athletes qualified for the XTERRA World Championship yesterday. “I’ve done XTERRA on Maui five times and I absolutely will do it again,” Geoghegan said. “That’s why I came here. Top Men
