(Maidens, VA) – The longest distance race in the 2009 XTERRA Trail Run Series took place yesterday at Dillon Lake. The main 30-kilometer event gave runners a grueling, endurance challenge, and it was Derk Kelly and Kelly Mosteller that took home the top titles.

Kelly, 27 from Courtland, conquered the men’s race in 2:27:05, while Cliff Gerber, 24, and Christopher Motta, 22, took home the second and third place prizes in 2:28:28 and 2:34:11 respectively.

In the women’s race, Norfolk’s Mosteller, 29, broke the tape in 3:20:01. Two minutes later, it was a photo finish for second and third place with just 3 seconds separating runner-up Ashley Grosch, 26 from Virginia Beach, and Brittany Holt, 29 from Mechanicsville.

The off-road adventure day also included a shorter 15-kilometer trail run that was won by Jay Wyss and Theresa Green. Wyss, 24, clocked in at 1:07:27 over three minutes ahead of 32-year old Wes Radetsky. Green, 38, came in at 1:28:48 with Greta Fiedler, 27 from Lynchburg, following in 1:34:31.

The XTERRA Dillon Lake Trail Run marked the 2009 finale of the XTERRA Virginia Trail Run Series. Top runners will be awarded points toward their series totals, and those with the highest scores will be crowned Regional Champions and awarded free entry to the September 13th XTERRA Trail Running National Championship in Bend, Oregon. While the race will include elite athletes from all over the country, no qualification is necessary, and all are welcome to compete.

Then on December 6th, runners are invited to race at the XTERRA Trail Running World Championship on the spectacular Hawaiian island of Oahu. Here athletes can run through the amazing Kualoa Ranch where major motion pictures like Jurassic Park, Godzilla, and LOST have been filmed.
