Voyles, Everett Pull Off Victory at XTERRA Pig Trail Run

(Macon, GA) – Competition was fierce at yesterday’s XTERRA Pig Trail Run as area runners sprinted over the 10-kilometer course behind the Georgia Children’s Home. Both the men’s and women’s races were decided by mere seconds giving runners and spectators alike an exciting photo finish.

Georgia Bulldog cross country runner and newcomer to the XTERRA Georgia Trail Run Series Travis Voyles, 20 of Douglasville, clocked the fastest time of the day in a blazing 37:44. Just eleven seconds back was series 20-24 age group leader Jason Veclotch of Tyrone barely edging out Bonaire local Marc Kushinka, 20, by just two-tenths of a second.

The women’s raced also proved to be quite a show as Jenny Everett, 30 of Charlotte, NC, crossed the finish line in 44:33 putting just six seconds between her and 2nd place finisher Tara Mooney of Kennesaw. Series regular Mooney has won her 25-29 age group in each of the 5 races she’s entered this season and is consistently gaining ground on current leader Janelle Van Houw of Atlanta for the title of XTERRA Regional Champion with just one race remaining.

Race director Tim Schroer said “participants really enjoyed the course and the venue, and like always, we enjoyed the runners just as much. We are really looking forward to the great course at Rock Hawk next month.”

Coming up next in the 2009 XTERRA Georgia Trail Run Series is the season finale in Eatonton. The XTERRA Rock Hawk event will be the last chance for area runners to pad their series scores in hopes of winning the coveted Regional Champion title and free entry into the XTERRA Trail Running National Championship on September 13 in Bend, Oregon. From there Georgia athletes can say aloha to the Hawaiian island of Oahu for the December 6th XTERRA Trail Run Worlds where they can go head against a stacked international field of runners.
