Weather Finally Cooperates as Cutright, Hamlin Win XTERRA Virginia Trail Run

(Oilville, VA) – After being postponed from its original May date due to week-long storms destroying the trails, the XTERRA Cinco in Mayo Trail Run went off on Sunday without a hitch. According to race director Mark Junkermann, “We had a beautiful day at Camp Hilbert.”

The event was even better for Daniel Cutright and Laura Hamlin as they took home their first place prizes for the 5-mile trail run. At just 18 years old, Cutright blew away his competition in just 34:41, crossing the finish line three and a half minutes ahead of runner-up Derk Kelly, 26 of Courtland, VA. Paul Eley of Fredericksburg rounded out the men’s top three in 38:25.

Finishing strong and 7th overall, Hamlin, 27, won the women’s race in 40:28, just two minutes ahead of Meghann McCarthy, 40, and five minutes ahead of Jessika Weaver, 24.

This was the third of four races in the 2009 XTERRA Virginia Trail Run Series, so area runners only have one more chance to earn points toward their series totals. Ending the season with a top age group total earns the title of XTERRA Regional Champion and free entry to the XTERRA Trail Running National Championship on September 13 in Bend, Oregon. Then on December 6th, athletes are given the opportunity to race alongside trail running’s best at the XTERRA Trail Running World Championship at the spectacular Kualoa Ranch on the Hawaiian island of Oahu.

The XTERRA Virginia Trail Run Series finale is set for August 22 at Dillon Lake in Maidens, VA. The entire season has been building up to this main, grueling 30-kilometer event, so this is one runners will not want to miss. For those looking for a shorter challenge, a 15km race will also be available.
