XTERRA Kicks Off SoCal Trail Run Series in MalibuRACE #1 IN THE 2009 XTERRA SoCAL TRAIL RUN SERIES After a three month hiatus since last season, runners are gearing up for another exciting XTERRA SoCal Trail Run Series kicking off on September 28 with the XTERRA Point Mugu Xduro. An 18-kilometer trek through the tricky turns and rugged hills of La Jolla Canyon in Point Mugu State Park will quickly remind runners why they love the extreme challenge of XTERRA. For those looking for a more gradual start to their season, an 11-kilometer course is also available. Standing out from the hundreds of talented runners in the XTERRA SoCal Trail Run Series is 15-year old Hunter Todd of Roseville, CA. This 2007 XTERRA Trail Run Nationals age group silver medalist will be racing in the 18km Xduro event in hopes of qualifying for the XTERRA Trail Running World Championship taking place on December 7 in Hawaii. If his young age weren’t impressive enough, Hunter was also born with a congenital heart condition called Tetralogy of Fallot which consists of four distinct and serious malfunctions of the heart. With the help of his father Terry and a heart rate monitor, Hunter is on the road to his goal of being crowned a World Champion. Point Mugu State Park is located in the stunning Santa Monica Mountains with 5 miles of shoreline and more than 70 miles of hiking trails. In an effort to keep this environment beautiful and reduce the use of plastic, each of the XTERRA SoCal Trail Run Series events is going green. Recycling programs have been initiated and stations will be set up to collect used batteries and do light bulb exchanges. Art supplies in good condition are also being collected to donate to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Since this is the first race in the 2008-09 XTERRA SoCal Trail Run Series, runners will be eager to start their series’ totals with top scores. Athletes earning the most points at the end of the series will be awarded free entry to next year’s XTERRA Trail Running National Championship in Bend, Oregon.
