XTERRA Iron Will Race ReportBy Fred Phillips, XTERRA Rep Jonesboro is only 60 minutes away from the Blues Capitol of the world, Memphis TN. The Race Venue is Craig Head Forest Park, which has nearly 15 miles of off road trails. You’ll find a tight and twisty trail, roots and several technical short, but tuff little climbs. Basically a ton of sweet single track. Race day it self started out in the mid 70’s. Thank fully the competitors finished prior to the heat of the day, which hit 100. The shade in the single track was welcome on both the bike and the run. But the air hung thick with humidity in the woods…. The Course was comprised of a ½ mile swim a 10.6 mile bike and a 3 mile run. The lake at Jonesboro was good and clear. The Bike Course has a few technical sections, but most sections were “let it rip and suck the bark off the trees in your wake”…. The Run Course was fairly flat and was extremely fast. On the men’s side the race started with the strong swimmers off on the bike first, but within the next few minutes came the strong bikers. Fourth out of the water emerged Tige Lamb of Lexana KS the eventual Overall Male winner. He later stated that he took the lead after about 5 miles and then just put the hammer down to win in 1:34:40. On the Women’s side Lucia Colbert of Cordova TN. took the overall in 1:49:19. It needs to be noted that Lucia races in the 50-54 age group. She bested here next female competitor by nearly 15 minutes…. All together Jeff Owns the Race Director and Jason Wilkie the Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Jonesboro Arkansas, put together a truly quality event.
