XTERRA Sky High Race Report

By Ann Mickey, XTERRA Rep

Final preparations were being completed 30 minutes prior to race start when  thick fog rolled in blanketing Long Pond,  where the XTERRA Sky High was to soon start.  One minute you could see Long Pond the next minute it was gone. Forty minutes after 8 am (official start time ) the OK was given and the race began.  The two lap swim with a short run in between laps went smoothly with Kevin Crossman coming out of water first for the men in 17:24 and Christine Hall in 18:25 for the women.

The bike phase transitioned quickly as the athletes headed out through 200 yards of soft sand to begin the long 20K technical mountain course. The mountain bike course consists of slippery roots, rocks and mud! It had rained for a couple days prior to the race and the evidence was there with big mud puddles. First off the bike was Paul Fronhofer who had come out of the water over 2 minutes behind the leaders but made up time on the bike posting the fastest bike time of the day 46:51. He was followed closely by Anthony Snoble.

Fronhofer was the man to beat.  Snoble found that catching and passing Fronhofer was more difficult than it appeared and Paul won overall with a time of 1:35:18.

The youngest athlete Julia Slyer 11 years of age had just won the kids triathlon just the day before this competition. She completed the full course in just 2:57:40. She is the future of XTERRA and we look forward to seeing her on the pro podium someday.
