East Championship Course Gets Boost

Dave Nicholas was home in Hawaii when an employee returned from Virginia with a tip about an unlikely place to stage one of the world's most rugged outdoor sports competitions.

The employee, a University of Virginia graduate, had been visiting a friend in Richmond who introduced him to the James River Park.

"He said, 'Dave, you're not going to believe this, but we can have Xterra in the middle of a city!'" recalled Nicholas, managing director of Xterra, which holds competitions around the world for people who like to run, bike and swim in challenging terrain.
