Utah Scramble Series Kickoff



(Salt Lake City) - The first annual XTERRA Utah Scramble Trail Running Series was initiated through rain, mud, and goose feathers.  Thirty-two dedicated trail-runners braved precarious weather to run an 8k or 1.6k race at Wheeler Farm in Murray on Sunday, May 28th.
 
Among the dedicated runners was Draper resident, Kiley Green, age 12, and her father, Bill Green, who ran the 8k together.  Green encouraged and coached Kiley over a creek, under low tree branches, and through a herd of wild geese, resulting in Kiley winning the top spot in her division.
 
Another young runner, Chris Burnett of Farmington, ran the 8k in 30:34 minutes.  Burnett, age 17, came in fifth place overall and first in his division (10-19 yrs./male).  We expect to see Burnett kick some trail butt in upcoming races.
 
Bob Thompson came in first place overall and first in his division (30-39 yrs/male) with a 25:56 time.  Thompson runs a fast mile at just over five minutes per mile.
 
Kelly Milligan, age 45, from Park City, is the top runner for the women's division with a 31:25 time.
 
First place male and female runners each received a free pair of trail-running shoes from Salt Lake Running Company.  XTERRA Gear gift certificates and a subscription to Trail-Runner Magazine were raffled off to all race participants.  Volunteers and runners received complimentary Gu, Gatorade, Health Bars from Beverly Hills Bakery, two race t-shirts, and five dollar coupons for Wild Oats.
 
There was a steady down pour of rain while volunteers set up for the race.  Ten minutes before the race started the sun came out, runners and wild geese stretched out in the sun, seizing a brief moment of warmth from Mother Nature.  The rain returned just as the runners were packing up their medals and glam swag to head home, endorphins sparking.
