Atlanta Scramblers Span the Generations
(Atlanta, GA) - Six-year-old Kobe Kitigawa, 42-year-old Tim Kitigawa, and 61-year-old Ted Unser have a lot in common for athletes from three different generations: they all toed the line - and finished together - at the XTERRA Atlanta Scramble over the weekend.
More than 55 years separate these racers, but only seconds separated them at the finish line. First came Unser in 35:29, followed by the young Kitigawa in 35:55, and his dad in 35:56. The trio joined other 5K racers as well as a field of 10K racers at Georgia International Horse Park for the final Scramble of the 2005 series. Portions of the fun, rolling, off-road course traced the steps where Olympians competed in mountain bike and equestrian events.
While the podium spots went mostly to Gen-Xers and twenty-somethings, the heart of the pack at the Atlanta races was multi-generational. Eddie Shirey, 53, found himself surrounded by racers half his age in the overall results. Shirey posted a fine 29:37 finish for the 5K event. Striding across the finish with him was Chris Cox, 24 who also finished in 29:37. Next to cross the line was Kevin Brannon, 27 who posted a 30-flat.
The top 5K finishers also bridged the three-generation gap. Fourteen-year-old Mark Lendry took first place in 19:29. Mark Jidov, 50 won silver in 20:06. And David Powell, 35 earned bronze in 20:26.
The XTERRA® Trail Run Scramble Series offers "do-able adventures" for runners looking for the challenge only nature and XTERRA can offer - leaping over rocks and roots, climbing hills and trails, and running through creeks and ravines. A SCRAMBLE is a twisting, turning escape from pounding the pavement. A SCRAMBLE is fun and on the edge. Please check back for the 2006 Scramble Series schedule for races in your region.
