Iron Will XC TriathlonBy Fred Phillips, XTERRA Representative (Jonesboro, AR – June 12, 2005) Sunday morning started out bright and sunny and stayed that way all day. The 800 yard swim was a point to point, triangular course. The 10 mile mountain bike course was tough. The first five miles was tight, twisty with constant elevation change, mainly short little power climbs. Then you received a half-mile section of fast double track and then you were back into the deep woods for the last five miles which was again tight, twisty with plenty of log overs. The run was fairly flat, which provided for some very fast times. Chris Pickerell, (SE 15-19) bested the field with a time of 1:32:44, and local girl Karen Martin crushed the women’s field by nearly 15 minutes to post a time of 2:08:11. Pickerell led from the start, posting the fastest swim time and returning on the bike in first place. Although Boomer Leopold (SC 25-29) was hot on his heels coming off the bike, Pickerell laid down a strong performance on the run and held Leopold off to take his first overall XTERRA win. Thanks to the Jonesboro Sports and Recreation Department for their hard work. Hope to see you all out here next year!
