2010 Collegiate Racing

Hi man,
I have raced Xterra for 3 Seasons and just now got into college. From what I saw last year the college scene was very small and as such I am choosing to stay racing as an individual this year. If you manage to field a team good luck with your season.

2010 Collegiate Racing

I'm curious, what's the story here?

I participated in my first XTERRA in August of 2009, and am looking to do many more in 2010.

All I know so far is this webpage:
http://www.xterraplanet.com/races/collegiate.cfm

Here's where I'm scratching my head; My college is rather large (40,000 enrolled students) and I wonder if we'll be able to meet the minimum 3 men and 3 women to compete in a race. I seem to be the only one on the Triathlon team with a mountain bike. I'm considering recruiting from the cycling team.

Is there an active collegiate racing scene in XTERRA? If I manage to field a team, will there be anyone out there to compete with?

XTERRA Collegiate Division 411

cool thanks guys and gals. I think I'll enter collegiate. I've been doing xterra's for the past 3 years, and a couple of freshman at our school started a triathlon club this year (I was too lazy). So I figured, my last race in college, might as well race in the collegiate division. I think I could probably still qualify for nationals too, looking at last year in my age group it was me, Hosea, and Zack representin the southwest division. And I see that 5 people are allowed from the 20-24 age group. And if I don't make it, oh well I'll race collegiate nationals the day before. And to dave: I don't know if I could do both races. That would be pretty hardcore!!! But that cerveza offer might entice me!!!!

And two more general questions, is the xterra west course for the bike and run going to be the same as last year? Just wondering. I also would like to volunteer for any events the day before, is there a place on the race website link that I just sign up or something?

XTERRA Collegiate Division 411

Miss Emily is right FBJ. If you race collegiate you do not get XTERRA points. To perhaps clear one point - if you are in college you do not need to enter collegiate. If points and a national age group championship is your goal it would serve you best to enter as a normal age grouper. The choice is yours. you can race West as collegiate and bring honor and glory to your school and then race the other events as an age grouper, get loads of points, qualify for Tahoe and rule that world bringing even more glory. In fact, you could race the Collegiate Nationals on Saturday at Tahoe and age group on Sunday. Tell you what - you do that and the old Kahuna will make sure you don't pay for one beer at the party Sunday night.

XTERRA Collegiate Division 411

Dear FunnyBonesJones,
Congratulations about graduating in June. As far as XTERRA goes, you can only race as a collegiate when you are in college, so you are correct about the West Championship being the last championship race you can compete in as a student. Registering for the West Championship as a student will enter you in the collegiate race and give you the college discount, but your time will not be counted toward qualifying for the National Championship. Once you graduate, you can simply just sign up for the next point series races without the collegiate status. You are not obligated to sign up for the West Championship as a collegiate if you would like your time to help you qualify for Nationals, but you would not be able to win the collegiate title or be part of a collegiate team. How you sign up for each race will determine which category your time will be counted toward. Please let us know if you have any further questions. My email address is emily@xterraplanet.com. Good luck with the race!

XTERRA Collegiate Division 411

I have a question about my situation. I am graduating in june, and I plan to do the xterra west regional championship. I assume I can register as a collegiate there, and I won't be able to register as a collegiate for any races after june. My plan is to do the west champs as a collegiate and try to qualify for the full distance national championship as an age grouper with some points series races after june. Will that work?

XTERRA Collegiate Division 411

XTERRA is the nation's leading off-road triathlon series (swim, mountain bike, trail run) and has been around since 1996, but this is the first year XTERRA has offered a collegiate division.

Here's how it works:

Any collegian with a current photo ID can race for their school as an individual. You do need to be a member of a school club or team.

There are no age groups in the collegiate division, just male and female categories.

Collegiate racers do not collect points in the XTERRA America Tour Series and are not eligible for age group awards - they only race against other collegiate entries.

Whenever there are three athletes from two or more schools entered in the same race they'll go against each other for school pride in the college team division. There must be at least two schools with teams for a team award to be presented.

A "team" must consist of at least 3 male or female members. There are no mixed teams. A team can have more entrants, but less than three will not constitute a team.

Points for team awards (male and female) will count the finishing positions of the smallest number entered by a qualifying team. Example: College A has 5 men; College B has 7 men; College C has 9 men. Only the fastest 5 finishers will count towards the team awards.

Points for team awards will be calculated based on the finishing positions of the team members. The lowest total is the winner. Example: Each team counts 3 athletes. Team A finishes 1st, 8th and 15th overall for a total number 24. Team B finishes 5th, 6th and 10th for a total number 21. Team C finishes 2nd, 9th and 20th for a total number of 31. Team B wins.
In no case will more than 7 athletes count towards the team awards regardless of the total number of entries by any one team. Should a club enter more than 7 men or women, the coach must nominate the 7 individuals he wants scored for team awards. Other members are still eligible for individual awards, but their finishing position will not be counted towards the team totals.
Positions counted are overall positions in gender, not just collegiate entrants. This would include professional entries.

COLLEGIATE CUP:

A Collegiate Cup award will be given when two or more schools have at least 3 men and 3 women per school represented. Example: College A has 5 men, 2 women; College B has 7 men, 3 women. There can be no Collegiate Cup award as there are not 2 teams that meet the overall requirements.
Should two or more schools have the necessary entries scoring will be similar to the team scoring method with all finishing positions of qualified team members added. Lowest count wins.

ALSO:

Collegiate entrants race for separate awards. Awards will be presented to the top three male and female individual collegiate division finishers, the winning men's and women's teams, and the winner of the Collegiate Cup competition (if applicable). Pre-Registration is required for the XTERRA Collegiate Cup to be presented.
No special wave starts are necessary. Individual wave starts can be done at the RD's discretion, but all collegiate entries must start in the same wave.
Athletes competing in the Collegiate Division do not prevent XTERRA Age Group athletes from receiving XTERRA America Tour points.

All collegiate entrants must be USAT Members or pay the $10 one day insurance fee.
At the XTERRA Regional Champ races listed below collegians can enter the Sport distance but as an age group athlete. There is no college division in the half-distance XTERRA Sport race.

The Collegiate Division will be available at all XTERRA Regional Championship events and most all XTERRA Points Series races. Please check with the race director when registering.
There are 60 XTERRA?races in 30+ states across the U.S. in this year's XTERRA?America Tour to choose from. See the complete race schedule at xterraplanet.com.

XTERRA Regional Events:

May 18 - XTERRA?West (Vail Lake Resort in Temecula, CA - Great place to Camp)
June 8 - XTERRA?Southeast (unreal mtn biking at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, AL)
June 15 - XTERRA?East (Urban adventure at its finest in Richmond, VA)
Aug. 16 - XTERRA?Mountain (Killer Olympic venue at Snowbasin Resort near Ogden, UT)
For the championship distance races listed above (generally a 1.5k swim, 30k mountain bike, and 10k trail run) collegians get a break on registration fees - its $75 rather than the normal $115.

Oct. 4 - XTERRA?Collegiate Nationals (Epic mtn biking on the Flume trail - Lake Tahoe, NV)
750m swim in Lake Tahoe - 32k Mountain Bike on the Flume - 5k Forest Trail Run

All college students are welcome to race for the inaugural XTERRA Collegiate National Championship on Saturday, Oct. 4 in Lake Tahoe, Nevada!
