How do you get your bike to the race?

For those of you who race all over the country, how do you get your bike to the race if you're not driving with it? For example, if it's a race on the other side of the country, and you're going to fly, do you fly with your bike as checked baggage, of have a shipping carrier ship your bike?

Many airlines and shipping carriers have really raised their rates recently, so I'm looking for some economical options.

Also, do you ship/transport in a bike case or do you just bubble-wrap your bike like crazy and ship/transport it complete?

Thanks,
James

On the subject of nearsightedness, I am near sighted, too. I now use vision corrected swim goggles. They make a huge difference in sighting buoys during the swim, finding your way to transition, and finding your bike. I get them from Kiefer. Only a few bucks more than regular goggles. Just specify your diopters.

Thanks.

I didn't find it in the rules, but I get the same impression from a different post I saw.

That moderator stated she leaves "throw aways" at the waters edge. She than attempts to find them upon exiting, but doesn't waste too much time.

Oh great I thought. Since I'm nearsighted, I have no depth perception and everything on the ground will be a blurr until I get to my glasses in the transition area.

If you should be doing NJ Devil, I went to the Boyscout camp over the weekend to look at the area I was questioning. It's mostly dirt, but that 50' of 3/4 gravel with the broken glass in front of the reception building, that's gonna be a PROBLEM!!

Thanks again.

Tri Footwear

I'm not an official but, anything on your feet during the swim is probably illegal under USTA rule 4.9:

"4.9 Illegal Equipment. Any swimmer wearing any artificial propulsion device, including but not limited to fins, gloves, paddles, or floating devices of any kind shall be disqualified."

Illegal or not, for sure you would be frowned upon! The standard practice in case of tender feet and rough transitions is to leave a pair of shoes or flip flops near the water's edge. Slip them on AFTER the swim.

I'll be doing the NJ Devil XTERRA Tri.

After the swim, there is a 1/4 mi. trail run to get to the transition area.

What, if any, footwear is approved to be worn during the swim portion?

Hold yourself accountable to work out on a consistent basis and focus on swimming, biking and running. Start out with short workouts and as you get in better shape, gradually increase the length of the workout.

If you are really serious about learning how to train, you might want to consider reading books like the triathletes training bible or hiring a coach who can help guide you and answer your questions along the way.

Ted
