So tell me who has heard of this:

I've heard of something similar to that for marathon training, except it's more like 6 days with one off to rest. e.g.

Day:
1-regular run
2-regular run adding sprints (fartleks!)
3-regular run
4-wind sprints (30-45 sec) with short jog in between for half regular run
5-easy run
6-long run...10%more than your regular run
7-rest up...walk, maybe have a beer!

BTW, that "long run" becomes your new regular run. Remember, it's marathon training!
Your plan looks pretty good as a maintenance program to stay in shape.

So tell me who has heard of this:

It comes from the (Furman Institute of Running and Scientific Training)

I was an all-american cross country runner in college in NAIA.

Back then i would run up to 90 miles a week.

I've now been in the army over 4 years.

I think that this (FIRST) program is the best thing i've heard, and could become a basis for a perfect xterra training program.

the gist is that you 'never run' more than 3 days a week. the other 3-4 days are for everything 'except' running.

the three days a week consist of 1 long run, ... 1 tempo run, ... and 1 interval session.

has anyone else heard of this?

camelback while running?

I run with mine in training on longer runs and I use my biking one, so it's weighed down with tools, food, tube, pump, etc. I do plan to use it on raceday but I have a couple different ones and the one I'll run with on raceday will be a lighter, more basic model than my Mule, and will just have water, electrolyte tabs, and gels in it.

Like the others are saying, if it's comfortable for you, then I'd do it. I don't like carrying a bottle in my hands -- it makes my arms tired from gripping it. That's just me though...

camelback while running?

Ive used both small camel baks and the Fuel-belt that was mentioned above, but usually decide according to my run distance. If you take the time to fit the straps properly before the run, I think it can be super comfortable and definitely will keep you from keeling over if you didn't do a great job of staying hydrated on your ride. I like using the 2-bottle Fuel-belt so that I can keep one straight water, and one electrolyes. Drawback to those though is that its not a lot of fluid if you're looking at long runs, and I find the 4 pack belt ends up feeling very lopsided and heavy.

Trail Shoe Suggestions

what's your foot like? wide/narrow, and high/low volume?

montrails (medium) have lots of arch support, la sportivas (very narrow) have a fair amount, merrels (medium) have a little and you can always pick up an insole with added support as well for any shoes
