26 vs 29er Hardtail vs Full Suspension

Happened to notice the recent date on your post and thought I would help out. You may have noticed the forums here are not heavily used, but at times are helpful. You will be fine on your Niner hardtail 29er. It can handle any course out there, from non-technical to rocky like the old Maui course, or the new one as well. XTERRA bike courses are hard to categorize because there are so many site-specific variables, but I would suggest picturing a typical mtb XC course at high speeds. I have used a Niner hardtail for many Xterra races for the last 6 years, scandium Air 9 and now carbon. Tubeless and low pressure helps a lot. Now, if money is not a concern you probably know you can now get a 29er carbon dualie which will weigh the same or less than your hardtail with 80-100 mm XC race travel. That could be better for a one quiver race bike, but be prepared to spend lots of $$$. I would save the money for upgrades to your hardtail like race wheelsets, etc.

26 vs 29er Hardtail vs Full Suspension

Hello, I'm a newbie so please be patient with me. I'm thinking about doing an XTERRA Tri in the near future and want to know what people recommend as a MTB for an XTERRA event. I'm interested in your opinions whether 26" or 29" is the way to go and either hard tail or full suspension. I've owned and ridden both bikes and understand the advantages of both. I currently ride a Niner hardtail and honestly prefer it over the 26" FS bike but I mostly ride what I would describe as non-technical single track type Texas trails in an around San Antonio TX. I have no idea what an XTERRA course would entail. Appreciate whatever insight you might have.

Shipping bike to maui

@ kdallow, UGH...united! not sure where your coming from in the states, so i'm not sure of what kind of shipping problems - $$$$ and logistics you would run into. i live in Pennsylvania, so shipping my bike to Maui is out of the question. it is much cheaper $$$$ wise to take it on the plane. US Air is my major carrior out of Philadelphia, transport of bike one way cost me $100.00

as for United, they are one of the worst with charging fees for bicycles from what i inderstand. they charged me $299.00 one-way home from National's in Utah last year. that price was even after i had to empty out 5lbs worth of gear.

departing Maui last year, i did ship my bike home via Fedex. a one week deliverytime cost me $130.00

Cyclocross?

Can some one please explain to me why 'cross bikes are not given an official time in xterra events? From most of the course descriptions I've read and most of the 'cross riding I've done in these and similar parks it seems that a 'cross bike will be faster. Isn't the goal in a race like this to go fast? Does any one have experience with this?

I found this especially helpful for climbing up hills. The shifting is fast and easy. The brakes are incredible! The wheels are straight and round. There are some minor nicks but nothing of significance. This bike is in fantastic shape and you will love it.....It was ridden for only about 4 months last summer/early fall.

Read reviews on the internet and see what everyone else is saying.

The bike will be professionally packed by my local bike shop using bicycle specific packing materials and box. This is $50.00, included in the shipping cost. I estimate total shipping/handling to be about $100. It may be more or less depending on where you live. I am not trying to make money on the shipping so if total shipping/handling is less than $100 I will reimburse you.

Included with the bike is a pump for the shock and fork. Under the seat is a bike bag clamp. I will include it along with the bag, which contains an extra tube.

Pedals are NOT INCLUDED. Bar Ends are NOT INCLUDED.

Please let me know if you need any more information or want specific photos.

This Trek is fully tuned and will arrive ready to ride!

Email me at offroadcoach@gmail.com if you would like to see more pictures.

It's a great bike but I am selling this because I have too many bikes. I'm the original owner. Mileage on it is relatively low. I train on a road bike most of the time and use my mountain bikes for racing events and the occasional weekend ride.

I have 3 great mountain bikes so the riding gets spread around among them. This has been used for races I have done that have a lot of tight single track and climbing. I've ridden this bike to multiple Xterra podiums. It is very stiff and responsive.

Most of the parts are the original parts that came with the bike. I purchased it in July of 07.

Note: The wheeelset is not tubeless but can be set up that way with a conversion kit.

Price: $1200 shipping included. Paypal preferred.

If interested or have questions, email me at offroadcoach@gmail.com

Ted
